Starting issue

Is this a common problem?

When I start my falco it seems to hesitate, 'click' and then start. At the 'click' point it appears to restart the battery and so the computer resets itself. This means I have to reset the clock, change back to mph and reset the rev limiter. This even happens at fuel stops.

Yes - usually a sign that your battery is needing to be retired for a new one.

Nevertheless, check all connections are clean and tight first - but my money is on a new battery being the solution.

Worth the money as starting with a weak battery can have an adverse effect on the sprag - besides the hassle of sorting out the resets all the time.

How do I know if it's the original battery?

Hey DRider looks like you should pull both our threads together!!

PH100- Having starter issues too!!

Have just had chat with DRider and have just ordered one of the Yuasa batt's people seem to recomend as it was becoming a bit of a lottery starting the thing

My battery was fortunate in having a date on...2005, so time for a change

...I just hope that fixes it...good luck with yours!

Good tip, however if your battery is completely sh@gged an optimate will not help, as I've found out.
By all means buy one, but it might be too late to recover your current battery.

Things I did were:
- wire mod,
- new battery,
- yamaha starter relay

Over a year now, ~13k miles and it hasn't failed to start, or popped a reset.

I had one of them, it showed the battery healthy, and it wouldn't even try to spin the engine.
Was replaced by an optimate 4 very quickly.

Start relay is virtually plug 'n' play

....wiring mod isn't though :smt011

A wire mod is soldering extra wires between the battery and the reg/rec. Basically you're improving the connection:

The Yamaha relay is a 100A unit whereas the Aprilia uses a 50A version, I think. You can order it from your Yam dealer, part no:

There are pics later in the thread.
You need the take the rear plastics off the bike, then it'll become clearer.

The relay is a straight swap, it also lives under the rear plastic on the RHS as you sit on the bike. You basically disconnect the old one and put the new one in.

You'll probably find if you order the bits, someone will be up for helping you fit them. Either that or get down to one of the meets and someone will...
