You have to put some thought in the titles don't you to create some interest....anyway....

...Ok here we go again for my monthly...'my bike won't start thread'!! :smt011

Was out a couple of weeks ago, parked the bike in shed, went in yesterday to start her, half hearted attempt then a few clicks and nothing!

Batt low, Kmph showing so put the charger on for 10-15 mins, tried a few times and all i got was a load of 'clicking', the dash MPH shot up with the clicking then when i stopped pressing the starter switch the clicks continued for another 1-2 seconds. Standing for two weeks with the alarm connected isn't a good recepie so i took the fuse out the alarm and connected the charger and left it

Will be back down on Mon morn and hopefully the gremlins will have gone, had similar probs in past when not left charger on, sometimes a bit of time passing or pushing it along the lawn has sometimes 'done something'

I'm sure it's not connected but i did unbolt the tank and airbox in readiness for a K&N filter adding, just incase there are any 'sensors' in that area although i doubt it

Fingers crossed will start on Mon and it will be just one of those things. Will have to stop spending money on 'bling' and invest in making the thing start everytime!!

Any comments welcome as per usual

Thanks guys

Buy a bling battery

Optimate. The battery isnt too big against the cranking amps required to start it, so it needs good battery husbandry especially if it's alarmed too.. or else you'll end up with the click... :smt002

YTZ 14S is slightly shorter 110 mm high instead of 145 mm. It also has a higher CCA rating, 230 instead of 200. Much easier starting, especially in cold weather. But you're still likely to need an Optimate etc. if the bike's lefts standing for days on end in the winter.

Like this : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Yuasa-YTZ14S-Batt ... 19be0df3db

Other suppliers are asking twice this chap's price; I got one recently from him, and it's fine.

YTZ 14S + upgraded starter solenoid + trickle charger = instant starting every time ( as long as everything else is ok ). Even on the coldest of mornings - and the Fut has to live outside, under a cover.

Having said that, though, the Fut doesn't have your manual cold start/choke thingy - the bike's electronic system does it for you; don't know if that would make a difference.

Yes I fitted a YTZ 14S earlier in the year .... I posted up about it and there was a bit of discussion about battery technologies and other things .... thread tended to ramble a bit as I was sorting out various issues - mainly why my bike wouldn't start ....

Well went to start it again this morning and nothing, there's a 'machine gun' type rapid clicking, thought the trickle charger would have done it's work over the weekend, the charger showed 12.8 on the screen and the bike about 12.4, nothing but a whole load of clicking. Even just putting the lights on took it down to 10 then 8 then it died!

Not sure if the chargers not charging correctly or the batts had it, it has a sticker dated 2005, is that too long to keep a battery??

So you thinks i need this new battery, have got the trickle charger (didn't use it as i wanted to see how long it would stay charged for...well now i know!!)

What's the 'upgraded starter solenoid?? Haven't looked yet but will doing a search bring it up

...it's so b***dy annoying :smt011

If it's only showing around 12.8 after being on charge, I'd suspect the battery. Fully charged, it should be near 13.5v and the fact that it died rapidly when the lights are on confirms it's had it (unless there's a high resistance connection in the battery feed but I guess you've checked for that).
