Dash cut out again
The bike had working superb all day plenty of thrashing stopping and starting.
But on the last fuel stop I went to start the bike the rev counter stuttered and just heard clicking.I turned the key off and back on again it fired up straight away but the dash had totally reset itself back to factory setting ie kph rev limiter on blah blah blah.

Why does it do this
Because when you turn the starter motor, it draws a very hefty current and when your battery is getting beyond its prime, it's internal resistance increases and that hefty current will drop a lot of volts across the internal resistance dropping the terminal voltage. If the terminal voltage drops too low, it becomes too little to operate the dash and it resets - coming up in it's default configuration.
Keeping your battery well charged will reduce the frequency with which you experience this problem but the writing is on the wall for your battery ...

Yep .... Other sources of resistance like this will have the same effect - so are worth trying first.fastasfcuk wrote:i had this problem a couple of years ago and after speaking to saun at corse performance he told me to tighten the battery terminals even if they feel tight. it cured the dash resets, worth a try before you buy a battery.if it was doing it from cold then yes change the battery.

Another thing I've had on the "to do" list for too long.

I had a reset the other day, stopped for fuel went to fire her up and:smt013
I realised that I had the headlight on full beam and it just didn't like it. It's got a brand new battery (kept on a conditioner) and a new Yamaha starter solenoid, I just guess every available volt is needed to go to the starter to get these birds fired up.

Unless you've just started the bike and run 1/2 mile up the road before stopping, I don't think having your headlight on is the problem. My headlight is always on, I never turn it off, and I've not had a dash reset when out and about, only when in the garage at home and I've not used the bike in a while. The charging system should be more than sufficient to supply enough to run the lights and recharge the battery, so it shouldn't be that (unless there's a fault somewhere in it), even when mine has been sat for a while without the Optimate, the headlight is on before I thumb the starter and I don't get a reset (unless it's been more than a couple of weeks).
Be worth doing the other checks (battery terminals etc) first, then be worth checking the alternator performance (probably something in the workshop manual for that), usually put a multi-meter on the battery terminals, and measure the voltage across them on load (tickover and some defined engine speed). If it's low, could be a case of your connectors going, look into the infamous "wiring mod"
