Warning - Looking for volunteer!!!!

#1 Post by old git » Wed May 12, 2010 7:16 pm

OK, so fitted Ohlins rear suspension last weekend, and have been for a few miles.
Heresy I know, but have not experienced the euphoria & 2nd coming I had expected over the stock blue shaks springer!
Am I expecting something that don't exist or is it that I don't have it set right.??
Twas off fleabay, but as far as I can see has had very few miles on it, in brill condition & it is abit smoother, just maybe not sure what I am looking for.
So, this is where the offers start to flood in ( :smt040 -hopes) is there anyone out ther daft enough & with nothing better to do that wants to offer me a day out so I can come over & let you have a look at my set-up to see what you think.????
Could be that it is fine and I am just looking for something like riding a cushion that ain't gona happen, I just don;t know.
Ta.

ok

you will see the light but.....

inform she who must be obeyed that on 22 may you are out for the day

when your black eye has opened enough to see properly again, put your normal riding gear on, and carry your helmet ... then stand on some scales - write down the weight it shows

on 22 may got to national club aprilia day

join the queue to get suspension set by griff

when at front give him 20 quid

he sets your suspension - you go test ride it afterwards

then you smile and say - i see :)

lol

seriously you need to get it set up right

others here can set their own bikes up - i can only do minor stuff so i pay a specialist to do it for me

Yep. If you can't get to the Aprilia day or want to get involved yourself with a bit of advice and a second opinion.

I'm near Market Harborough. I set mine up a few years ago and when we had a session with Griff last year, there wasn't really anything to change. I did slacken of front compression one click afterwards.

I was a Mechanical engineer and national class racer so understand the principles but I'm not a wiz mechanic. (I lose patience if things don't go as planned and have been known to reach for the hammer..........It's not usually the bike that gets harmed though.)

I also have the Ohlins but mine came with so I can't vouch for any transformations, but it'd be useful for a back to back comparison. Also the roads near by are as good a test for a road suspension set up as you are going to get.

Any way if you want to venture this far, PM and see if there are any mutually convenient dates.
Don't put off 'till tomorrow what you can enjoy today

mmmmm ..... this is getting confusing with too many Keiths .... Old Git Keith ... HisNibbs Keith ..... bet Cheggers will be along soon .....

Also getting confused with Old Git's domestic plans .... thought it was the Newark meet on 16th you couldn't make because of the "state visit"?
Just to clarify
  • Ridersite Newark meet on 16th
    Club Aprilia Day on 22nd
if you can get to either , you are most welcome.

EDIT: Just realised it was your mum on 16th .... so both weekends are no-go zones ....

Now the shocks:

Ohlins:

Blue Spring Sachs:

When I put my Blue spring shock back on the other day I could tell immediately ... that was just riding down the drive turning round and putting the bike away ... and it wasn't even something I was thinking about when I went to put the bike away - just noticed it and thought "ah yes .... "

The place you really notice it though is when pushing on down twisty bumpy roads. Bouncy pogo thingy versus nice controlled rear end (the bike's too).
We'll that's my honest opinion - not rose tinted perception as there's bling on there.

If you can't get to any of our meet-ups, you're not far from Griff anyway. Give him a ring, book it in to be set up and he'll probably show you how to do it too.

Must be a set-up issue. Before I even dialled mine in it was just WOW - bike completely transformed.

After setting it up I couldn't believe how well the Falco felt - tracks like on rails and oh so smooooth over the lumpy bits

I had mine set up by an expert over here on the island. I rode it home and it was pants.

By a process of trial and error I got mine right, but it involved minor adjustment, followed by a ride, another minor adjustment, followed by another ride etc etc. This continued until it felt right. A lot depends on how you want it to feel and the rider you are and the roads you ride. However, as start point you need to know where you are starting from. I simply did this by marking the preload position with a maker and counting the clicks until rebound and compression damping was wound fully up; winding it back and adjusting from there.

I guess that, if I took it back to the my expert, he would tell me it is all wrong. However it feels right to me, the back wheel stays planted on our bumpy roads and my arse stays on the seat (mostly) and I feel confident on it. Thats all the matters really.

Experiment. You can't bust it by doing so.

One last thing, you are assuming the shock is in good working order. It might need re-working if you can't improve matters by adjustment.

I'm having my newly acquired Falco delivered to Griff, where on Tuesday 18th he will be taking me through the whole suspension set up. I'll let you know how it goes in case that helps you decide to do the same, though from what I've read about the man, and from talking to him, I can't see you'd have any better option than to pay him for his invaluable advice. Regardless of the fact that you'd be getting your suspension set up properly, it will help you understand it for future adjustments (if you need them). I would venture to suggest that this Griff bloke is just about the best accessory you could need for your Falco :smt003. You've saved yourself a bit by buying the unit off ebay, so use those savings to get the best from it. You've already admitted that your knowledge is lacking (a brave move on here) and I'm exactly the same - hence the sign up to the great fountain of knowledge that is Griff. I'll keep you posted.

Rene

Yeah I've met Griff, nice bloke and very local (maybe 5 miles) so if I can't make the 22nd I could always pop along to his :)

If there's little difference from stock then that suggests to me the preload is wound up and perhaps the compression/rebound are also too firm. Try winding the preload off a bit and ensuring the damping adjustment is in the middle of the range.
