Racing Milles on track days

#1 Post by ReggieGasket » Thu Aug 27, 2009 9:28 pm

If I race a Mille on a track day, where will I lose out? Mine's a 2000 model with PCIII on "fast road" 122hp on the dyno, maxton forks an an Ohlins rear shock. Surely I can stick with them?

The bikes performance might be a lot closer than the rider's abilities.........

Best do your own thing and don't try sticking to anything. Of course that is easier said than done when the red mist decends. Give it time and you might just find them getting in your way.
Don't put off 'till tomorrow what you can enjoy today

Go out and had fun! trying to stick with certain people or bikes often ends up badly!

What track are you going to do?

Hi there, I have used both the Falco and Mille on track at Croft at different times and there was very little, if any, difference as far as I was concerned. The Falco was standard apart from a Mille(white spring) shock, my Mille was the "R", full Ohlins etc. Pushed both as hard as each other, used the Vmax option, both within 1mph at the fastest point. As previously said, you are not there to race, but to ENJOY the experience, you will find your own pace throughout the day and get REAL confidence in your tyres (as long as they are Pirelli!!!). Hope this helps you and have a safe day. :smt004

Fear not chaps, I'm no trackday biffer. Just wondering if there was a clear difference, because on paper they look to be very similar. Pleased to hear they are. As you say, the rider is normally the slowest bit. I don't push the limits too much on trackdays (never crashed on track) and was there at Cadwell when a guy was killed (on a Mille) so am well aware of the sickening waste of serious injury on what is a fun day. Having said all that, I do enjoy passing people on trackdays - you can see me passing an R1 on my CB500 at Silverstone on YouTube :smt106 I didn't pass too many people that day I must admit!

I had BT45s on, so had to be a bit careful!

yeah. i found that my bt45's gave much more grip on a cold day than they did on a warm day. on the warm day they were sliding all over the place because the rubber was overheating! on the cold day they just keep gripping!

Thanks Reggie, enjoyed that. :smt003

It induced vague recollections of a TD at Snetti on my cibber hack on BT45s.

I smoked the R1s too .... literally. Seems they disappeared in a cloud of white smoke when I hit the limiter in every gear. :smt053

Thanks, the CB is a great bike for track days; real easy to ride and more sporty than it looks. Yes, I must admit I'm impressed with the BT45s. I've been trying to destroy them all year so I can put some 020s (?) on, which are the tyres they use in the CB500 Cup, but I can't finish them off! The rear has done 8k miles and 3 track days and is still legal! The dual compound idea makes a lot of sense, especially on a bike like this which will never spin up the rear. Knee down in the wet at Anglesea, but it is a grippy track. I'm less inclined to use road tyres on the Falco at a track day, becuase it does spoil the day a bit if you're always waiting for a slide and race tyres are so cheap (pre-used). This means I'll need a spare set of wheels at some point, as race tyres are not so good in the cold and wet.
