when I switch the motor off after being on a run I get this awful clonk noise,on restart the bike makes a crunching noise and very difficult to start, sorry about no updates from my west coast holiday but it was tragic and not up to talking about just yet.
I am only asking this as the sottish police dropped my bike and if the problem is a bad one I will try and get them to write it off

the bike makes a clonk also when you switch off the ignition, then hard to start,I noticed on one occasion the rev limiter had reverted back to 5k limit as if I had a flat battery.
So what is the SAG and why would the limiter revert back to 5k.

The sprag is the part of the starting 'mechanicals' most likely to fail. I wouldnt worry about the clunk on shutdown yet, but if it crunches on startup, like the starter is missing teeth then its not the actual starter but part of the engine that the starter pushes around.
Its expensive to fix if you have to take it to a dealer , i think the parts are about £300 alone, but can be done cheaper if you can wield a spanner

The rev light resets to 6k if your battery is anything less than 99% fully charged. Its the starter sucking all the power and the dashboard loses its settings. Its not the rev-limiter, thats factory set at about 9.5-10k just the warning light. Your speedo probably went back to kph aswell :smt002

The police dropped it sounds like the start of an 'interesting' story and if you can convince them they broke the sprag then go for it :smt004

Sounds awful for you...and as a Scots police I would be interested to hear what happened, especially interested to hear how the police got into a situation where they were able to drop the bike in the first place :smt017 . If I can be of any assistance drop me a PM....unless you have had enough of the plod that is :smt002

My thoughts are with you also. My best friend was killed whilst out on his Fireblade last Wednesday. We have the funeral tomorrow where four of us will form an honour guard and carry him into the chapel. Like you I cannot come to terms with it at the moment, I'm hoping the funeral and the wake afterwards will help. We fully intend to celebrate his life rather than mourn his loss (if that makes sense?)

I fully expect to be drunk out of my mind by tomorrow evening

I really don't know what to say. My thoughts go out to both of you - I can't imagine what it would be like to be in a situation like that, and I hope I never have to find out. This has been a particularly bad year for the forum community with losing friends and loved ones. Let's hope we've come to an end of that phase.

What a terrible few days!
I can only echo what Mango has said, my thoughts go out to both of you and to the families concerned.
Hope you both get through it OK.

Condolences Mrapriliafalco and Falco9.
Most of us know what it is like to lose a close friend through biking.
Best wishes to both of you on the days of the funerals.
