Weird electrical glitch

Funny one this.
Left my Oxford Hot Grips (with cut out) on accidentally yesterday morning when I came into work. I've tested this cut-out functionality before and the cut out doesn't come in quick enough - ie still enough to prime the fuel pump but not enough to crank her over.
Anyhoo, tried to bump start it once but failed, so called out the RAC, who gave me a jump start. Rode around for 20 mins or so, switched off at around 40mph then thumbed the starter and she fired up fine.
The battery appears fine now and I left it on the optimate for about 5 hours til midnight when I got home - however every time I start it now the rev counter flickers before doing the rev limit test, and each time the odometer resets to Kms.
Any ideas? Is it simply the battery (which does seem fine, no probs starting) or am I looking at something more sinister?

Leave it on the optimate for longer - 5hrs may not have charged it properly.
See how that goes and we'll think more after you get back to us.
Could be the battery is knackered - but that would be a premature diagnosis.

What D-R said - leave it on the Optimate until the "Condition" light goes green (assuming you can leave it plugged in), or give it a good run out and see what happens then.

Cheers folks - the condition light was green when I took it off but it may be borderline. I'll give it a boost over the weekend and see how it goes.

try nipping your battery terminals up,even if they seem tight, i had a similar problem a while back and this cured it.

Tell me about it! I had an early start on a cool day, my commute is over the Severn Bridge, my hands were freezing in my summer gloves.
This hasn't sorted itself out - put the bike on optimate over the weekend and it still flickers on startup. Starts first time in the morning though if left off the optimate overnight. I think a new battery is in order.

That certainly is the easiest (though maybe not the cheapest) thing to try next.

Hmmm. I bought a new battery but haven't fitted it yet. Last time I used the bike was Friday and it started 1st time today no problems. The rev counter is still flicking and the clocks are still resetting every time though - anyone had this before?

Never had it, but I do think it has been heard of. Might be worth a search of "the other site".
My guess would be a dodgy connection somewhere, maybe around the headstock? Might be worth a quick check of your wiring to see if anything seems frayed, or over-tight when turning the bars.

Yep, do the above and check all the connectors between battery and instrument pack for contact cleanliness and security.
..... and fit the new battery .....
BTW, take the old battery out first - it won't work well placed on top of the old one

Hmm, thread resurrection. LAzy arse that I am I only got round to putting in the new battery today. Clocks are still fubar, resetting everytime I switch on :(
Connectors are tight, don't know where else to check?

Something may have cooked bad connection or maybe the starter solenoid, did you put the tilt switch back upside down?
Check all the connections are clean give the battery a volt test should show at least 13 volts if its a good one.

Anyone care to justify why this thread is in Aprilia rather than the general forum?
