Just about to do the 9.5k service which includes checking the shim clearances and noticed that it does not mention in the workshop manual about dropping the oil and coolant. Is this true cos when I did my other bike I had to drop them both.

To be honest I am being a little lazy as I thought I would just change the oil and spark plugs at the weekend and do the shim check in a few more weeks when I have more time.

Think you'll find that you are required to do these things.

You basically hit 2 lists of things that have to be done.
It's the second time that you have to do the things that should be done every 4687miles (eg oil change)
It's the first time you need to do the things that are required every 9375miles.

BTW I can virtually guarantee your valve clearances will be in-spec .... not sure I've ever heard of one that's actually required changing at this service .... and very few at the next.

Just done 9400 miles and the service light is on. I know the oil was changed at 8500 miles when Sidey bought it but I have the oil and plugs so gonna change it anyway.

So are you saying I need to dump the oil and coolant to do the shim check right ? , just like my old bike.

If you can guarantee my shims I wont bother To be honest I did this on my old TDM at 28,000 miles and they were in spec too .

BTW did you do that bikesafe day ?

If you are asking whether you need to drain the oil and / or coolant to check the valve clearances then no. You just need to remove the rocker covers, plugs and that little hex key cover on the crank case.

I thought you were asking what service items are required at the (roughly) 9500 mile service.
If your oil was changed early at 8500miles then it won't need to be changed yet ... Did the other 9500 mile items get done early too?

I don't think you have to drop the oil to check the valves (though I've never done this myself so can't swear to it).
Have a look at the Workshop manual, that should make it clear.
(Oh, hang on, Fausto has confirmed that you don't - so that's clear enough)


Oh and BTW I can't guarantee your clearances will be ok - just very surprised if they are not.

And, no, not done bikesafe yet ... for 2 reasons:
1) The first date for this year has not come round yet
2) I was knocked off 2.5 weeks ago by a SMIDSY and am nursing 4 broken ribs ... will be a few weeks before I'm riding again

Just had a major service at 8600 miles. Valve clearances had not budged.

Cheers - yeah, not so bad. Most of the time the painkillers do their job well.
Should be back at work next week.

Just checked the valve clearances at 9.5k and D-Rider's theory notches up another point. All in spec.

Mines done 50K miles now and I've religiously checked the valves and they've never budged a thou from new.

Heal quick D, had a close call only this morning - bluddy myopic car drivers, cant seem to see farther then the end of their bonnets, bastids

LOL .... thanks Anzac .... but most of the healing is done .... this is an old thread and that happened nearly 2 years ago.
Still get pain in my ribs from time to time on longer rides but guess that's just a fact of life now. Generally it's fine though.
Would just like to get the insurance side of things settled .........

Hope you and the bike are recovering well You must have squillion spare parts for your mount and no spare ribs in the garage though......

Always one exception to the rule .

Had mine serviced in 2009 (b*st*rds scratched my tank) and I was informed (and billed) I needed two shims both front exhaust (tight) if memory serves .

I have no reason to doubt them, as I know the mechanic and he went into great detail as to how bloody hard it was to change them.
