My ultra-reliable Falco seems to have developed a bit of a run of electrical woes.

Firstly, around Christmas, the starter relay died .... now sorted with a new relay from Scooter Assassins.

Secondly, last week, the horn died .... traced to the horn button and fixed (it wasn't the switch contacts either - I'll post up later to explain)

Last night I set off into town and made really great progress at an indicated 0mph. Half way there, some other numbers flicked on, went away and then came back to life just fine. Coming home, no problem.
This morning, set off to work and it was the same again ... an indicated 0mph till I got half way here ... then fine.
Not investigated yet but these things usually seem to be the speed sensor - though not sure I've heard of this scenario of non-work at the beginning, come on part way through and (seemingly reliably) stay on.
Have to investigate this at some point I guess ... and look out for a spare sensor to keep by me ...

Hi Andy, had this problem with mine.
It was the speed sensor, think i picked one up for £35 second hand.
They are around £70 new.

I also had a sensor failure after having a new tyre fitted at a garage, the problem is that it's mounted adjacent to the brake caliper in a very exposed position any work involving removing the rear wheel is potently dangerous to it as any nick or brake in the wire or insulation lets moisture in and then its as good as dead.

Theres a brand new speed sensor on ebay at the moment D-R

Yep .... already got my beady little eye on that .... unfortunately with 4 days to go I guess I'm unlikely to get it at a bargain price .... but I can hope.

Probably one of the unfortunate side-effects of being an all-seasons biker, I guess. Is there anything one can do to protect an essentially virgin sensor from the harsh environment in which it lives? Smother it in RTV from an early age, for example?

Well I won that sensor for £20 + £2.50 postage - no other bidders result

I checked out the sensor on my bike last night as per the workshop manual and that confirmed that it had died ..... along with the fact that the speedo has only shown zero for several days now (of course I've only been riding it off road in that time you understand )

What's more my lad's scooter speedo stopped working yesterday ... broken cable .... one of those ordered from ebay too .....
