Highbeam

Gents,
The other day my highbeam stopped working.

When I push the headlight switch up one click the the little bulb in the centre comes on.

When I push the switch up another click the large bulb in the centre comes on.

When I push the red high beam switch in the large bulb in the centre goes out, but the two bulbs located at the sides do not come on.

Now surely they haven't both died at exactly the same time. I also understand that the same fuse looks after the both the high and low beam so it can't be that.

Any suggestions?

Edited to add, I've just swapped the low bean and high beam relays over and it made no difference.

Also if I do try new bulds, any suggestions?

Edited again to say I've just tried the lap switch and that doesn't flash the lights.

I should add that bothe the red high beam switch and the lap switch operate the highbeam light on the dash.

I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that bot of the bulds went at once.

Thanks,

Phill

One thing to look at is the actual high/low switch itself.

Mine got a little loose inside and I has a very similar experience to yours ( except I think in reverse?) Either way it made the lights fail on one or the other setting.

Easily fixed it by tightening it up. :smt003

Ta for the response, I'm guessing your low beam wasn't going off and the highbeam wans't coming on either. I think that since my low beam goes out and the dash light comes on the switch must be working.

The more I think about it the more I think I need to change the bulbs and check if its them.

Actually now I think about it I remember that hitting high beam killed ALL the lights !!

Rather alarming at the time :smt009

I once had a similar problem with a car. Both headlights failed at the same time and I convinced myself that it couldn't be both bulbs. I was wrong. It was either a coincidence, or I just hadn't noticed the failure of the first bulb. Sounds to me like you have the same situation.

I lost the all lights (except side light) and it turned out to be a dry solder joint to the switch itself. None of the solder joints on the electrics seem particularly good :-(

I also had a strange prob with the indicators coming on when canning the bike, turned out to be water corroding the switch contacts for the indicators causing a duff connection.

It would seem the installation of the electrics on my Falco seem to be it's weak spot. Probably a Friday bike???

OK, so its looking like the best bet is to change the bulbs and take it from there. Any advise on which are best?

Thanks,

I fitted Powerbulbs to my Triumph and the family cars two years ago and they're still going strong. Free (fast) delivery, BOGOF, and a free 5W marker bulb.

If both main beam headlights went out at the same time and won't work via headlight switch or flasher, it probably won't be both bulbs blowing at exactly the same time, but it's always an easy one to try, (well sort of, as it ain't easy getting to the main beam bulbs with all the plastics in place).
Don't have access to a manual here at work but I would look at the main beam fuse first then (if there is one) check the relay.
Excuse me if you've covered this already, but don't have time to read all the full details at work.
P.S. you should be able to look at the manual through the Tech links on the site to check if there is a relay, the fuses are easy to locate.

Now, this is getting irritating! I've replaced one of the bulbs and still noting. The headlight fuse is fine, as is the high beam / low beam relay.

I can hear the relay click when I operate ither the highbeam push button or the lap switch so surely this must mean the switch is working.

Any ideas?

Ta.

Changed the other bulb now, as expected, still not working. There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the old bulbs either...Nightmare!
