Bought a Falco - now what? (warning - newb questions)

#1 Post by dyzio » Mon Dec 08, 2008 8:14 pm

First of all, hello everyone.
Some of you will know me from the AF1 forum. I've owned an sv650 for some time now, and I've bought a 2004 SL this weekend. Rode it only a couple(ish) of miles but I've still got a grin on my face :smt003
I'll be keeping it in the lock up for two months and I figure I can do some work in that time:

1) Starter relay - got a part number and the local Yamaha dealer says they can order it for me (36 quid)
2) Side stand - that will need replacing. Did some research and there's no falco/vtr stands on ebay at the moment, but loads of gsxr ones - but which one do I need (600, 750, 1000 - what year)?
3) Already ordered a maximiser but I was thinking about doing the wire mod (it's basically about adding extra wires between the battery and the connector block, right?)?
4) There's no problem fitting a scottoiler?

The rest isn't essential (cans, heated grips) me thinks... I'll probably come up with other ideas the longer I spend on here :)

Cheers

Dyzio

Hi Dyzio and welcome to the site.
As for the mods, i've not had a problem with the starter relay, and no problem starting since using an optimate for the battery.
I've had my Falco for nearly eight years now, and it still puts a grin on my face.
Also got a Gixer stand on, think it was from a K6 1000.
It needed drilling to get the centre bolt to fit but had no problem since.
As for the Scottoiler, i still prefer the Wurth spray, but someone will be along shortly to tell you about the best method.
Or just look at the posts on that topic.

Anyway thats enough of that, now get into the virtual bar and buy us all a drink before we spend the limit on your credit card on bling.

I'll have a pint of The Old Peculiar please.

The rest isn't essential

Oh dear. Oh very dear.. Oh very dear indeed....

Firstly welcome Dyzio. Af1 eh? Glad you made it across!

Secondly, I should warn you these guys in the Falco forum are seriously damaging to your monetary wellbeing.

If you have a decent credit rating, best grab a load of cards while you can.

Essential kit for Falcos..

Cans
Airkits
Chips (to accompany above 2)
Various bits of Mille (swingarms are a favourite here)
Various differing bodywork mods
there's more... they'll probably find bits of your SV that will come to be of use on the falco..

The lunatics will be here in a minute..

Hide your credit rating from them. Burn any bank statements.
If youve got an anglegrinder and a dremel, hide them too.

Warning ends.

Yeah, I know what you mean :)
Just getting the basic stuff now (maximiser, relay, abba stand fittings, side stand).
Cans, rear shock, belly pan will follow :) Will be thinking of stuff to do as I get more mileage on it and figure out what needs to be done.

Just run a search for "credit card" (as in, ways we'll suggest you abuse yours) for a "few" ideas

Hi dyzio - glad you've found this forum too. Good to have a Falco in Aberdeen again (Goldie had one 'till he defected to the charms of an R1 ....)

Just forget all the mods and keep it standard

(i don't think we've got one like that ..... and I just wanted to traumatise Kwackerz with advice he thought he'd never hear)

So yours is a 2004 .... Olympic Bronze or Flamingo Red ? (Hint - one is the best Falco by far, the other is red).

I've not had to do the starter relay swap - I did have a bit of problem with mine but managed to sort it out and it's been fine since - I've posted up about what I did and can let you know but my guess is you'll probably just replace the relay.
You don't have to shell out for the Yamaha one, THESE have been tried and found to be OK (and are much cheaper).

Yes, I have the GSXR stand too. TBH we can't definitively state which Gixer stands fit and which don't .... but most look to be the same. Do a search and you'll find out what they look like and how the stand has to be modified to get it to work with the Falco.
A very good mod to do.

Never done the wire mod - don't think it's that important. Keep the contacts of the brown connector clean and I doubt you'll have a problem.

Scottoiler - brilliant bit of kit - quite a few of us have them and there are many solutions to fitting them - again a search will bring up pictures and descriptions. I'll tell you my fitting method is best and others will tell you there's is best. Have a look and make up your own mind .... though we'll be happy to advise.

Anyway, whatever you do and don't do to it, just enjoy it

welcome

most importasnt mod is too paint it black to ensure it is fast....

also consider a firestorm stand as well as the gixxer

scottoiler - well worth it

oh, buy a hack saw.....

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...
