hmmm front forks

just looking into a few thoughts

what can i replace the front forks with?

(bird is 1999 model btw)

which model of mille fits?

what benefits are gained?

(as baldric once said - i have cunning plan.....)

I would say my forks but sorry I need them

Especially after I spent all that money on replacing the guts

Pretty much any of the Mille/Tuono stuff will fit, but later ones with radial brakes will need some work with the front wheel and disks, also the triples will need replacing as they are different diameters (narrower), clip ons can be shimmed up to fit.

nothing electronic - just thinking about having a go at a Motoczysz front end, if I could find the donor parts

Well worth having the std forks re-valved. I've spent years boring everyone to death here (sorry) about what a transformation it makes having top quality forks but it was the BEST money I ever spent on my old Falco it's only about £150 (showas)and you can't buy any quality forks for close to that amount. It's one of those mods where you can immediately tell the difference.

He's well used to doing Falco forks, but I met with him a week or so ago and he was telling me what a nightmare job it was to re-valve the marzocchi forks, apparently (and I don't want to upset anyone) they are not very good (not the words he used but I know folk can get sensitive) in comparison with the Showas

So if you have the Showas your laughing, if you have Mazz's it a longer job but it can be done, he hadn't been aware that Aprilia swapped forks during the production run and had quoted everyone based on the Showas

Good point F9. I had a really good chat with Gareth at Reactive. All ready to book the bike in for a re-valve and to have the fork "feet" hard anodised and explained that mine was the later, end of line, model with Marzocchi forks. Oh shit says Gareth - can't touch them because the have internal cartridge arrangements and it'll cost more to take the thing to bits and put back together you may as well buy some Ohlins replacements !!!

Seriously though - It's not cost effective to mess with the marzocchi forks but to re-valve the Showa forks he reckons is a very very effective suspension mod for the falco

I have marzocchis and all is true. The intenals are rolled together. Or in other words think of how the lid on any food can is put on....the metal lid is rolled on to the can...you know what I mean now yes

I had mine done at Maxton and it cost £50 more than it would with the showa's.....but I did get completely new internals...everything out and new everything in...

Did I notice the difference

I was seriously tempted to have a go at a new type of front end, but I have decided to spend the cash on getting the showas sorted instead

basically, I wanted to do away with the front forks, and just keep the lower parts of the legs. Graft a sold plate on to those that held a single rear shock, that went up to a second plate below the headstock

I recently watched a documentary about Motoczysz and i thought it was very interesting = and wanted to give it a try

(Oh - I also realised that they poured a lot of money into getting it right - hacksawing a few bits and using a sachs rear falco shock may not have the same effect.... but I was game!)

That's interesting Paddy. Reactive Suspension (Gareth) was really helpful but described a horror story (very expensive) about a job he'd done on Mazz fork for a recent customer. PM sent re Maxton

Forgot to add that I live 10 mins away from maxton. Keep trying because they dont man the phones all the time and also the TT is on its way so they like to keep the money men happy.
