Separating gear lever from footrest

Before I get the (rubber) hammer out, should the gear lever just slide off the pivot? The gear lever on mine rotates fine but won't slide off.

Fnarr. Always worth checking these things - the pivot was very dry, there was an incorrect washer in place of the Belleville washer and the wee ball part of the ball joint was loose. Slapped wrist needed I think.
