Refusing to rev and then cut out

#1 Post by Dalemac » Thu Jul 13, 2017 5:53 pm

Just had a very strange issue with the falco on my way home from work.

Filter up to the front of a set of lights, when they change, accelerate up through first, change into second, accelerate, change into third. Try to accelerate, but the bike refuses to rev. Pull the clutch in, the bike dies. Refuses to turn over.

Pull over, while feeling the glare of everyone I've just filtered past as I've not held them up!

Switch off the ignition, push the starter and she spins up, fires, and proceeds to get the rest of the way home as if nothing had happened.

No errors or warnings on the dash.

First thoughts are either tilt switch (though this wasn't moved when I serviced it a few weeks back) and possible fuel pimp issue, as I've had something similar before, bit it's never cut out like this and then refused to turn over without an ignition reset.

Typically, It's MOT day tomorrow!

Any other ideas?

I hate it when people ask if you have a bathroom, I want to say "No we pee in the garden"

Well, she's been running OK today, and she went through the MOT with zero advisories.

Hopefully just a blip, then!

Well, certainly temperamental.

Did 80 miles today with no issues whatsoever.

Who knows! Hopefully it was a one time thing

Fuses obviously ok.

Could be the fuel pump relay on its way?

Hard to tell tbh mate.

When it stops is fuel pump running?
Tolerance will be our undoing.

I can't remember whether the fuel pump was working when it cut out.

It wouldn't turn over though.

It does have a Taurus immobiliser. Maybe that's finally causing issues.

The fact that it won't turn over puts the fuel pump and associated gubbins off the suspect list (for now).
The immobiliser seems to have put itself in the frame...

Yeah, immobilizer is looking likely.

It's the first time it's caused an issue in over 7 years. And it's done 200 miles hassle free since it did it, so I'll cut it some slack.

If it happens again I'll trace the wiring and see how embedded into the loom it is.
