Water pump seals, dont try this at home
Unless you have access to a good quality press.
The pump drive shaft is a really tight fit in the mechanical (outer) seal, there is also a coil spring in there so the seal pushes against the impeller.
I pushed the drive shaft in using a vice, If the shaft does not go in totally square then the shaft will sieze in the mechanical seal and the plastic drive gear to the pump shaft gets destroyed...
As I found to my cost...
Clutch cover gasket £22.18, Mechanical seal £35.27, Drive shaft seal £15.41.
Drive gear wheel is not an available spare.
Luckily AP can provide me with a clutch cover with all the parts fitted.
It is not a job for the home mechanic, the manual makes it look straight forward, its not

Tolerance will be our undoing.
The difference between that post and my dilemma is that Can Am kit comes with the shaft factory fitted into the mechanical seal so all that needs doing is pressing the seal into the housing.
It is pressing the drive shaft into the seal which is the issue.
Anyway got the new casing fitted this afternoon and bike is gushing oil out of the top of the clutch cover.....
gasket looked fine, running out of ideas and patience now

The clutch cover gasket needed replacing so new one fitted today, went to fill the coolant system and the coolant just came straight out of the drain hole on the pump cover, the mechanical seal in the AP supplied casing is fucked.....
Back to square one or worse as the car failed its MOT and will take a week to get sorted.
This is really testing my se nse of humour

If you're stuck for transport just strap one of those gas bottles to some roller skates.fatboy wrote:The clutch cover gasket needed replacing so new one fitted today, went to fill the coolant system and the coolant just came straight out of the drain hole on the pump cover, the mechanical seal in the AP supplied casing is fucked.....

Insert humourous comment here
I am happy to say that the clutch cover supplied by AP is fine, the bike is up and running. A quick call to Griff at AP revealed the real culprits in this drama..
Me and a stainless steel engine bolt set bought on the interweb.
The 'drain' bolt on the waterpump cover ( in stainless ) was about 2 to 3mm too long and therefore would not seal.
He's a bit good at the detective work is that Mr Woolley-Jackson

After explaining all the work I had done Griff said ' That makes no sense, it cant leak from there with the right bolt fitted'
I may have thought of that after another hundred hours of buggering about

I hate it when people ask if you have a bathroom, I want to say "No we pee in the garden"
