Help a Noob Shock advice

#1 Post by JeanLucRidehard » Fri Jan 06, 2017 6:10 pm

Hi boys and girls

I've got chance of a Falco and need some advice on shocks please.

It currently has the yellow spring Sachs how does this compare to the Ohlins, is it worth the upgrade to the Ohlins.....

Any advice info greatly appreciated

Cheers JLRH

Hi,
the most sensible answer I can give you is see how you get on with it, it is by no means bottom rung on the ladder and opinion differs as to how close to top rung it is, as opinion differs whether the Ohlins really is top rung.
It is not a bad place to start from.... go ride :smt003

Thanks Fatboy

Fair comment, but as I'm getting a few bits done to it I thought if that was the way to go I'd get it done whilst it's getting some tlc.

I believe common consensus is that it is a perfectly acceptable upgrade if in good condition and if so wouldn't require rushing for an ohlins giving you the liluxury choosing and picking
If it was in good order I would concentrate on getting the stand front cog and other bits sorted ahead of changing the shock first
For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.
That said when it comes to motorbikes, I like to ride side saddle with a nice frock

I'd agree with my learned fiends... The yellow spring Sachs is mid-market, whereas the Ohlins is definitely up-market. The bue spring Sachs is a Trabant, the yellow spring Sachs is a VW Golf, the Ohlins is an Audi TT. Or something like that...

Cheers Mango, I read your post on shocks, but it was way above my level of understanding, your reply says it perfectly looks like it's the Audi TT then :smt008

I do recall a forum user saying he was really 'underwhelmed' when he swapped out a Nitron(?) unit for the Ohlins.
I can tell you, after having the blue spring then the white spring then the Ohlins :smt038 :smt038 :smt038 :smt038 :smt038
The Ohlins unit is top notch but may need more fettling to suit you.
Don't panic yourself into buying an Ohlins just because, bide your time and find a bargain

Cheers Fatboy, sound advice, I'm undecided to be honest but am on the hunt for one if its a good price.

TBO I've never rated Ohlins, my 1st blackbird had hyperpro and I'd not use any others now.

Every Ohlins I've ever had (and I've had 5 that I can remember) have always needed the spring rate reducing and the compression damping drastically reducing. They seem to assume that everyone wants to go racing. Having said that, the quality of the internal components is second to none. The worst was the one fitted to my 888 SP3. It had an 11kg spring fitted. After much experimentation I wound up with an 8.5kg spring. That's a massive difference - 23% in fact. The compression damping was sky high as well.

I agree with Gio as well, I rate Hyperpro very highly. Just about every bike I've had has benefited from Hyperpro progressive fork springs.

Thanks Gio

I've not heard of the Hyperpro, I'll put some research into that

In order of appearance, I've had a blue one (absolutely pants), a white Mille one (was good) and the current Ohlins one (miles better).
However, I'd go with the advice to get the other bits sorted first. The stand is an absolute must and then get rid of the standard cans :)

Yes, if you've got a yellow springs Sachs on the bike, then I'd attend to the other items first. As Katie and other have said, change that stand first. Options are as follow:

Honda Fireplace (bolts straight on)
Honda Blackbird (needs slight modification and works better with raised rear ride height)
Suzuki GSXR (quite a bit of modification in my experience, but works well)
Bubseywoo (don't laugh, I'm serious...)
USA-model Falco sidestand (spendy new and hard to get hold of secondhand)
Honda Firestorm (don't know how much work needed)

There may well be others. To be honest, pretty much anything can be made to fit if you have basic engineering facilities.
