Carbon Tank No1 - Trial Fit

#1 Post by D-Rider » Sat Aug 22, 2015 11:25 pm

Hi Folks

We've not only reached the phase of having the first tank made (not quite finished - still needs final fettling and lacquering) but we've also had it on a bike for a trial fit.

Here are some pics for you:

Looks nice.

I am wondering now he has done the hardest part to make that perhaps a fairing rear panel and side panels could be made. :smt017

The hugger and the front mud guard can be already purchased in carbon.

I'll probably ask around to see what demand there would be for the other parts but first we need to let Rich make the first batch of these ... and maybe some follow-on builds for latecomers .... plus all of the other stuff he's making.

...... and to let us save up again after buying our tanks !

I think you said they were 800 quid?

First batch price - offered cheap to get the project off the ground.

Rich has also found out that they require a lot more work than he expected so the uplift on future builds will be greater than originally anticipated.
Rich will sort that out in due course but £1,200 to £1,500 is the likely cost for future orders.

Just a couple more updates

In the post above I mentioned the result of a previous conversation which looked at the probable cost of future builds of tanks.
More recently, it seems the uplift isn't going to be as much as we thought then.
No point in me bandying about figures but those interested may not be as concerned when Richard is ready to make some more.

And the other good news is that Richard has done a quick capacity test - it seems that the increase is very good:
morepower wrote:Ok a quick update from your carbon manufacturing slacker... I am sorry.. I have not given an update for a while.. Work, holidays and general slackery.... But I have just done a leak test on the first sieve.. sorry fuel tank.. I have done a full tank capacity test too.. I only filled it to the bottom of the filler cap recess and not the shake and slosh the air out capacity. It held 25.5 Liters compared to the OEM 21 liter capacity. I am guessing if you are doing big miles you shake the tank to get a little more in there so you may find you can force it up to about 27 litres.. I am sure some of you guys have an idea of how much extra you get if you shake the tank so I would say the extra would be comparable..
