Re-commisioning

I posted a few threads last year when i bought a Falco with an engine issue (wrong engine had been fitted) and finally got a replacement engine and got it all back up and running. It was a bit late in the season so I only went out once and noticed that the speedo was erratic and usually wrong. I suspected the speed sensor on the rear wheel but have left the bike since covered over in the garage.
Now I know that he battery is knackered but I didn't want to replace it until such time as I was ready to ride it again as leaving it stood would just cause the new battery to go bad so my question is - is the speedo error likely to be caused by the knackered battery or the sensor itself? The speedo does work - just is erratic and displays random speeds - sometimes 0 sometimes 90MPH regardless of how fast I am going!

Those are certainly symptoms of a knackered sensor ..... I know it well having replaced mine 3 times.
Unfortunately they are not cheap.
BTW the Workshop Manual tells you how to test the sensor - so that's worth doing.
Who was it on here that was experimenting with an alternative sensor?
Did that ever get sorted out?
As for batteries, the YTX14H-BS is the daddy (Go for the one with the "H" in the code not the standard YTX14-BS)

Welcome back! I also had problems with my engine around the same time - we were crawling over the same forums for a while.
My sensor is looking decidedly fragile. The "gland" is cracked exposing the wire disappearing inside (what is in there? Magnetic reed switch? A leprechaun counting wheel revolutions against a pocket watch?) - a similar thing to what happened with the side stand switch.
I wondered if it can be saved rather than waiting for it to fail?

Nothing worse than a cracked gland! Seriously I must get this on the road and use it this year. I think the use of a paddock stand without bobbins may have damaged the sensor as it rests on the wiring. I'll put a battery on just to be sure that doesn't sort it as I need one anyway.
I need to sort out a pillion seat as well cos I think if the missus can come out I will be much more likely to use the falco...

Was it Wayno who went in depth with the speed sensor?
Provided a lot of detail regarding the sensor type/requirements ect.,ended up making a new holder to accommodate cheaper part
