There are two M6/M5 threads half way up on the inside of the left pillion footpeg hanger.

For the love of god(s)/goddess(es) WHY??

My immediate thoughts were they there for mounting a tax disc holder crafted from a paving slab - but it could be something else.

Yep, you are right, just been and had a look. The left peg hanger has a block specifically cast into it to accommodate those two tappings, the right does not.
Go on, go have a look see, it will do your head in :smt017

Give this man a cigar. Correct answer.

Unfortunately I only discovered this fact after I had fabricated a bracket to hold the Sachs remote preload adjuster, which I have fitted to the (non-crappy) yellow spring RSV shock on the blue bike.

And which will probably be superseded by the Ohlins I picked up off eBay last night for the princely sum of £200 inc. postage. The question is - will the Sachs preload adjuster fit an Ohlins shock.

I suspect it will... :smt003
