Hi all,

Have been toying with the idea of raising my clipons, looked at gilles riser bars, top yoke conversions, SW Motech etc... all abit pricey.

So, can anyone tell me the exact composition of the metal in our beloved clipons? Thinking of getting a spare set and cutting and welding in a 30mm chunk of aluminium maybe, or a composite

So, I can get or maintain the OEM look with the bonus of better posture on my ride

I can't help with the composition of the clipons (apart from saying "aluminium of some sort), but I can help with a spare set if you want to play around.

The only downside is that the right-hand one is broken where the handle-grip bit joins onto the clamp-around-the-fork bit.

Be careful welding them, I should imagine they will be cast, cast aluminium has something added to it to make it flow better in the mould (magnesium or silicon, I really can't remember what it is), the problem with this is that when you weld it the material will flow like a mutha and it's tricky to work with.

It can be done though (take alloy wheel repairs for example).

That depends on the construction and the placement of damage.

A few years ago I bought a set of OZ wheels - the front tyre was known to deflate - so I got them for a price I was happy to pay for just the rear.

When I got them I eventually located a hair line crack near the centre of the front rim. I went to several alloy wheel repair specialists and not one would work on a forged rim.
Eventually I bought a replacement front wheel and I still have the cracked one which may one day become an ornament!

Would have thought putting your clipons ontop of the top yoke, rather than under would be the simplest solution.
A number have done this and having riden Pete's I can say it works well.

If you can weld ali, then you might want to replicate what I'm doing at present. You'll also need to be able to cut ali tube at accurate 45 degree angles and do some machining if you want to use the standard handlebar end weight setup. First I bought a set of these clipons and clamps off ebay:

As you can see, they're from China, but quality is not bad. You'll need to run an M6 tap down all the clamp threads, and probably replace the allen bolts with stainless, but at £36 delivered you really can't complain.

Then I (metaphorically) threw away the supplied bars, and got the bars shown in the picture below made up:



As it happened, I couldn't find anyone that stocked 22mm x 3mm wall thickness ali tube, so had to be satisfied with 7/8" x 10g tube. This is close enough on o/d, but has a greater wall thickness, and if you want to use the existing bar end weight arrangement, you will need to get the internal diameter of the tube machined out to 16mm in order for the internal bit of the bar end weight to fit. You'll also need to get the last 20mm or so of the bar end tapped to M18 x 1.5.

Mine are now just about to undergo polishing and anodising, so will hopefully be fitting them in a couple of weeks or so (depending on turnround times).

You can of course play about with all or any dimensions. If you want higher bars, just make the 45mm measurement 60mm or 90mm or whatever. As it stands the bars are slightly higher than standard - probably about 20-25mm higher and further back than standard. This is with the clamps under the top yoke, I hasten to add.

This design also reduces the overall width of the bars by an inch or two. This was important for me as I have to wheel the bike down a narrow passageway and I was sick of scraping the bar ends. You can also swivel the bars to change your preferred position.

New Plan. Have decided to try and fit top yoke and bar off a tuono 2006. Have been doing long rides up to scotland on a regular basis (every w/end) and find it a tad achey. Does the tuono have 53mm stancheon's? So it will be a straight swop l hope

some bespoke yokes can be had for £165 on the web. I can get the tuono yoke cross bar except the actual bar for under £200 new!

Don't be temped to buy the knock off Renthal style bars that are all over the place cheap. The anodizing fades quickly, mine are a lovely shade of pink, and they bend easily.

Im guessing you have a small amount of forward/backward movement with the new bars by rotating the bar in the clamp ?
Be very interested in how you get on. I often feel my riding comfort would be much improved if I could spin the clip ons 5 degrees or so further forward

Hi FB, yes - they can be rotated a few degrees and do give you a degree of positioning freedom that you don't get with the standard bars. Right old faff to get them made up, though. I'm on the Mk IV version now...

Depends what forks they have fitted. If it's Showas, the answer is yes - 53mm. If it's Ohlins I believe (but I'm not 100% sure) that they are 51mm diameter.

Im following this with vested interest, Im now finding the falc a bit painfull to ride, left wrist now complains loudly about previous breakages.
