Falco wine (really...!)

Went to Lidl today, and on impulse I bought a bottle of Montefalco Sagrantino. It cost £9.99, but had a score of 88, which was higher than everything else (even the £19.99 wine) and sounded right up my street.

It is. It's bloody lovely. 30 months ageing, 12 in French oak, and it's like an Italian Chateauneuf du Pape. Rich, full, real depth and breadth. It's made from the Sagrantino grape which apparently only shows its best in this area, and it's definitely not yer average Italian wine, even though it's very recognisably Italian (does that make sense?)

And it's got Falco on the bottle! I only noticed that after we got home.

Honest.

Full title is MonteFalco Sagrantino 2009 Torrito del Falco. In the notes it says it goes well with 'important dishes of red meats and fowl, wild boar, mixed grilled meats and matured cheeses'. But it also says 'it may be tasted as a meditation wine'...

Now that's a new way of phrasing it... :smt003

I reckon this one will get picked up by the Guardian or somesuch and will then disappear off the shelves. You heard it here first...

I went to aldi and picked up a selection of their 3 quid wines so spent less overall and though it is peasant juice I don't care as its for the suegro (father in law) and as much as I love the guy I don't drink and he doesn't care so another aldi winner and I got two jumbo packs of their salted peanuts with the change !
( bad mistake on the peanuts as I have already eaten about a pound of them so tomorrow could be bad :smt010 )

Lidl and Aldi are excellent value at all the price points in their range, but I was particularly impressed with this one. So much so that I bought another 3 bottles today to lay down in the cellar and keep for a few years.

So I now have 3 Falcos in the cellar... :smt003

In that case, to ease the pain, I'd suggest you replace it with a MonteFalco - 15% AbV (I forgot to mention)... :smt004
