What have you been donig over the christmas period?

#1 Post by blinkey501 » Mon Dec 30, 2013 3:49 pm

First of all I have made two bike ramps, so no more cold floors on my knees. The ramps need finishing off painting. I have the plans if anybody wants a copy.
Then I started some more work on the track bike project. Look at the front wheel Geoff :smt017

Should I paint the bike or leave it as Heinz 57 variety?

Not got any before and after pics, but I've been busy insulating and damp-proofing my Man Cave/Bike Shed. The Roof space has been filled in with 70mm Kingspan/Celotex type insulation, and most of the brick courses have been drilled and pumped with silicone type cream. And then any gaps in the insulation have been filled with Expanding Foam. The difference, even without any heating, is really noticeable.

I decided that winter time should be for fixing and fettling, and summer (when it arrives) should be for riding, so making a space that was useable even in the depths of winter was a priority. And I'm nearly there...

The building in question is an old brick-built structure that's at least 120 years old and was originally intended as a communal wash house, with attached outside toilets. Two of the outside toilets have been knocked into one to provide a small workshop area, and the wash house is where the bike lives. A hole has been knocked into the wall connecting the workshop area and the bike space so I will be able to move easily between the two areas.

I've still yet to set up a workbench, and there's a load more work to be done, but good progress has been made in the last week or so. And I still managed to get a substantial volume of red inside me over the hols - bit of a result, if you ask me... :smt003

I meant to ask, Jay. Did you design the bike ramp yourself, or is it a commercially-available one? I bought some designs off a bloke who sells on ebay a year or so ago, but have never got round to getting the steel and making it up. One day I really will get a Round Tuit...

I borrowed the plans off someone in the village.
They are on the net somewhere. although they look to have been photo copied from a book.
The frame is 40mm box section.
Fairly straight forward :smt003

Yes looks good - though I'd be tempted to make a couple of mods.
  • A) I reckon I'd be a lot happier if the floor rails extended further forward .... just in case it lifted with a lot of weight at the front.

    B) I'd add a positive support so that it could be fixed in the raised position without relying solely on the trolley jack (and allowing you to remove the trolley jack for other purposes.
Nevertheless, nice job

The plans I've got incorporate a locking bar that means the ramp can be locked at a certain height and the trolley/bottle jack removed. The plans are 'filed' somewhere, which means I won't be able to find them for years... :smt003

I have been thinking about making something for a locking bar. I have plans. :smt002

I fitted the CF front mudguard to the Falco, and spent most of my days looking after Little Miss Viking.

As for the bike lift plans, I have several different sets available if people are interested...
It's the V-twin thing. There's just something about it that inline-4s don't have at all, and V-4s don't have enough of.
