Hi all, back here after a short break . Can anyone advise if I MUST have an SL eprom to use with the SL cans? Or is the original chip ok to run just the cans on, many thanks.

Mine ran fine on a boggo chip.

Much better with a Gabro though!

Massively smoother at the lower end. The stereotypical V-twin clatter/flat spots under 5k have completely gone. Just a smooth, buttery wave of torque from down low. Better mpg too. There is no downside. Do a search for Gabro, there's been a fair few threads on it.

If you cant get a Gabro have a word with Ed ( Forza Aprilia) and he will map one to your demands ...

Basically and IIRC each chip has different key characteristics and effectively manages a certain set of conditions. There is a natural tolerance within these parameters which allows them to manage conditions that they were not specifically designed/mapped for.

Basically if an open set of cans needs a certain mapping then chances are others with similar characteristics will not make dissimilar demands so you can get away with some mix and match.

That said like most tech stuff it will almost always work more efficiently within the exact conditions for which it was designed.....

obviously with the exception of almost anything designed for a Microsoft setup

The other thing to bear in mind with chips such as those Gabro puts together is that not only are they more suited to the modifications you might have made to your bike (you tell him your setup, he'll provide something to suit), he is not encumbered by having to meet noise and emissions regulations which compromise the fuelling of the OEM chips. You may well find that not only do they give a smoother delivery and more power but may well save fuel too. A common way of quietening bikes down is to chuck in excess fuel at the engine revs at which the noise tests are conducted.

Does anyone have an SL chip? What's it like?

It's a black rectangular plastic thingy with a row of metal legs down either side.





I don't have one but I have heard that it's fairly good with aftermarket and SL cans but tends to over-fuel.
I have heard it is not as refined as a Gabro (for example)

That said, it's certainly a reasonably highly rated chip.

I have one but it has broken pins.

Does anyone know which way round it goes on the protection board it comes with?

I want to make sure it's the right way rond before I try have it repaired .

there is a mark to show the way round it goes in

BUT

if it has broken pins..... i wouldn't bother

Depends where they are broken and how good you are with a soldering iron - you need to be good enough to make a good joint whilst being quick enough not to fry the chip.

..... that said, I'd find it the perfect excuse to justify a Gabro

theres no mark on the 'daughter board' to say which way round it goes. i know the chip itself is notch to notch.

the pins on the 'daughter baord' are very fragile and have broken off, i know an instrument tech who is gping to have a go at repairing them.


who sells gabro chips? i was going to get a forza chip if it can't be repiared.

I'd save yourself the bother of trying to repair it.

A Forza chip is only £45, just remember that you'll need the fuelling set up properly once you fit it.

Mine is ok to ride but am off to get Griff'd next Wednesday, as I reckon it's running a bit lean.

i'm not trying, someone else is.

How do you know its running lean? does it get alot hotter than usual?

how can the fuelling be set afterwards?

am i just better off with a power commander?

My personal view

Do the mods you want - and get a gabro chip made for that setup

Ed - forza's chips are also according to many good but are more generic

Also consider balancing etc

Power commanders have a place but with the gabro chip not totally necessary.... Only really for those wierdo's with strange hybrids....
