Hi all,

Took her out down the bike meet last night and had a bit of trouble with the gearbox...

It was trouble with downshifting from 3rd to 2nd...but only if you'd previously come down from 4th...if you went 2nd-3rd-2nd it was fine.

It was as if the return spring had gone as it would go down if you moved the lever back to the mid point.....weird..

Anyone had any experience of this or know if I'm being paranoid/mental or if it's a common fault?

Sometimes the gearchange linkages need cleaning up and lubricating - the ball joints and the pivot point on the footrest. This gives exactly the symptoms you describe.
A quick strip down and fettle will probably sort it ..... and while you are at it, check the pivot point on the rear brake pedal.

Previously on a yam I had a problem something like yours which turned out to be the detent spring... Or at least that's what I ordered. Was a small spring that sits behind the gear change part. After I changed it it totally changed the feel in shifting. Don't know if its that but if all else fails it may be worth a look.

That's what I first thought it was...but being that is only does it shifting down if you're slowing down through all the gears between 3rd and 2nd it's odd.

Start with the simple things first, as D-R reccommends, clean,lubricate linkage,adjust if needed.
Oil condition/ viscosity right ?
Try lifting the gearchange up slightly before changing down,compensating for a tired spring

Fiddled earlier.
The linkage is perfect.

If it had a tired return spring then it'd happen in all gears surely?
Also it's only a 7k mile bike....

hello all mine did that after only 4000mls i took the complete thing off
cleaned it/ re lube its been ok its only got to be a litle stiff to feck it up

Absolutely - needs stripping properly to sort it out

its one of the things i have done during my winter fettle

sounds silly, but stripping in down and a good soak and clean makes a world of difference

oh - getting the adjustment right for your feet and boots is also key....

Mmm ? If you are 110% sure the linkage and set up are not at fault and all is good on the lubrication side then its time to speak to a grown up what do know about more stuff bout them boxes of gears.
Methinks you got too much float on the shaft or dogs that hosts 2nd /3rd or similar wear problems, dogs not syncronising as they should ?
Try 2 things, small throttle blip with clutch in as you downchange or allowing a lot more time, throttled off between downshifting.
Both of which will allow 3rd/2nd gear pinions to reach almost matching speeds, in effect double de clutching.
