NWS hugger and 190/55 rear tyre

Don't mix!

I've recently fitted a set of Oz wheels to my Falco shod with a set of Dunlop Sportsmarts, 120/70 x 17 F & 190/55 x 17 R. When I fitted the rear wheel to the bike the previous week I was more than a little worried by the clearance (or lack of it) twixt tyre and hugger.

It only took me about 3 metres, pushing the bike out of the gate and onto the road, before I realised this clearance (or lack thereof) was going to be a show-stopper.

Do we have clearance, Clarence? (No we f*cking don't). What's your vector, Victor? (Heading back into the garage...)

So - having conclusively established that a 190/55 Sportsmart won't play nice with an NWS hugger, has anybody else successfully run a 190/55 with a hugger on a standard Falco swingarm? And if so, what make is it?

I fitted a 190/55 michelin road pilot 2 into the oasis last week with no issues :smt002
And i know Hissnibs fitted a road pilot 3 two his black crow

I was more than a bit pissed off, as I'd had the NWS hugger colour-matched to the bike (Flamingo Red), and it looked really good - well, I like it, anyway...

Having really liked the way the 190/55 works in my short ride today, I can't see myself changing back to a 180/55, so it rather looks as though I have a hugger surplus to requirements.

Unfortunately the colour it's painted means it will only be suitable for a Flamingo Red/Anthracite bike whose owner is happy to run a 180/55 at the rear... :smt011

But having seen how much crap a shock can pick up in a short ride on a nice day, I'd regard a hugger as an essential.

Shame about the hugger, all could not be lost though has pete has pointed out you could pack the hugger to clear.
I fitted the 190 section tyre with what hisnibs was saying at mallory.
I have not ridden the bike yet so i don't know what to expect. :smt017

I really rate the 190/55 rear - was well impressed with the way it handled and got out of corners. There seems to be more rubber in the area you need when getting on the power out of a corner, which is nice.

Consequently I can't see myself going back to a 180/55.

And as a result of that I will need a hugger that can cope with a 190/55.

Having had a good look at the NWS hugger, no amount of washers will cure the problem. The hugger profile as it wraps around the tyre is simply too flat and too close to the tyre. The hugger was already pretty close to the tyre with a 180/55, and the extra 5mm of tread height on a 190/55 turns a close fit into an obstruction.

I suspected someone would be along to suggest that.

And I suspected it might be Andy... :smt003

I have to say I'm not convinced, but would I still be able to retain my double-sided exhaust? There's absolutely no way I'm changing that.

To be honest, a hugger that plays nice with a 190/55 rear tyre is the simplest and preferred solution...

I'm running the NWS hugger in carbon fibre with 190/55 michelean 3. Clears the hugger just, evidence of chain touching the tyre occasionaly.
