Harwich isn't a bad price - must remember that.

The French Motorail is quoting about 470Euros per car from Calais to Narbonne, so half that for a bike = 235Euros. That's round about what you'd spend on food, drink, petrol, a night in a travelodge and motorway tolls going from one end of France to the other in a relaxed manner. Except on the train you can lounge around in the bar, then get a good night's sleep arriving at 8 the next morning and start the day with a free (if a bit crappy) breakfast.

but you haven't been riding your bike which is surely what a biking holiday is all about. I'm not criticising and I do understand peoples desire to just get straight to the better weather/best roads etc but for me the journey is all part of the experience. Even the dull bits.

Depends on what you want out of your holiday. For us this year it won't be another cross-continent trek, it'll be staying in one place and exploring the surrounding area on the bikes and possibly being visited by other bikers from this forum, so still very much a biking holiday. The journey down will still be a part of the experience in the same way that it doesn't stop being a bike holiday because you have to go on a cross channel ferry for a few hours. Using the train I can get an extra two days riding in somewhere new and hopefully interesting, THAT to me is a bike holiday.

both fair points - i think we all live to ride - spits at the hardley bollocks, but we also want to get the best ride we can as they say

the train, though a nice option, is beyond my price range - ie, i could not afford it

(have you seen the price of shoes for an 18 month old! and he needs new ones evry 2 months!)

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Just had a late reply from another holiday let - let you have a look at it...

Trying again-this time with Google maps link attached!

Peter- Apologies. I think you sent me an email previously but there have been IT glitches and I have had to re-register.
Our villa is in Portiragnes Plage, near Beziers. It is 5 mins walk from the beach. There is a swimming pool open usually from 1 June and lots of walks, cycling routes, horse risding as well as shops and restaurants all within 5-10 mins walk.

Our website is www.villainthelanguedoc.com

We usually can drive to Narbonne in about 30mins max (staright down the A9, exit 35 is 5-7 mins from us).

I am going to try and send a google map link below-our villa is to the west of the "A" and overlooking the fields in a north-westerly direction.

Please do email with any queries.
Kind regards

We're certainly not short of options, are we? I'm entirely agnostic about whichever place we settle on, as I love the whole area. But it's worth making the point that peeps need to decide what sort of holiday they want. If they want the option to pop down to the beach if only for a short while most days, then the Portiragnes Plage site is superb.

If most of the time will be spent on the bikes exploring and looking for biker-friendly roads, then some of the other options might be better, as you don't need to drive through the greater Beziers conurbation to get where you're going. Now don't get me wrong; in no way can Beziers traffic be compared to Manchester or Birmingham or Sheffield, but getting stuck in traffic in SoF heat with a V-twin isn't the most fun you can have with your leathers on.

But you do have ready access to the beach - and that's all part of a holiday...

Probably best we stay away from the beaches, people will keep trying to roll us back into the sea :smt003

I was, I meant the Missus and me (though of course if she reads this my holiday will be a week in hospital).

I've had a provsional acceptance at this BIKE FRIENDLY place, from June 20th for two weeks. I'm waiting for the price to be confirmed so I can get a deposit off to them.

The house: The Ninja belongs to the English guy who owns the place.

Phaze one: Complete!

#73 Post by Nooj » Sun Jan 25, 2009 2:42 pm

Righty-ho then... I've transfered a bag of virtual monies via the interweb, hopefully they will be flying through the ether as I type and will arrive in the house owner's account tomorrow.

So, all things being well, Debz and meself are booked in from 20th June to 5th July. We'll most likely be getting to Calais through the tunnel, then taking the MotoRail thing down to Narbonne.

I haven't mentioned that hordes of people may be turning up (which probably won't happen anyway) but I have said a friend may drop by for a week but hasn't decided either way yet.
