McCain

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Zoid, take the dust cap off, you only need to remove 2/3mm which is well away from the valve core.
With the dust cap off you get a good visual reference, steady hand, easy fix !

my preload is wound so tight at the minute it's a pig to ride.

All Falcos seem to vary a bit on clearance between the valve and the subframe.
Some get away with not doing anything, others like me, needed to cut more off the valve.
Don't just take the cap off and try it if it looks close.
The pin is proud of the valve body and will push against the subframe and let the gas out before you know it.
Cut enough off the end of the valve so it does not sit proud.
Slice it from the side carefully and you will not lose any gas if you don't press the pin down, cut carefully, I did it a bit at a time so it was more like filing it down.
I got to the point where I had one last go thinking anymore would be too much, before getting enough clearance. (I think I may also have cut the outer valve very slightly as well).
The saving grace was once done, it was so near to the subframe, it hardly needed a dust cap and with the pin just below the valve level, it could never be pushed down in use.
I set mine up with the stock Mille settings, which were OK for an old fat git like me, but you may like it a little softer. (settings found in one of the online manuals for Mille).
The ride height was increased slightly, but not too much initially, as I still had the original stand at that time.
Did this by screwing out/in until the distance between the mounting holes was the same as the Blue spring then opened up a bit further.
More ride height will improve turn in, so just screw the base bolt out to alter the position of the "eye".
Can't do this on the Falco.
After that I just set the Sag for me.
TIP, if you do have the shock refurbished, get it converted to a recessed valve.
My White Spring was almost brand new so used as was, but anything bought now will probably be well used.
Good luck.

It does appear barely used, but will be old now. The fella had it as a spare from his RSV after an upgrade. When I get it serviced i'll have a recessed valve put on.

Thanks for the tips, i've printed the shock setting from that particular year and will use those as a base.

Anything has to be better than the current blue sachs shock.

Well my second shock turned up today. A white spring mille item and the bottom eye is cracked through. Anyone got a spare or do I need to just send this back too?

Guess it depends how much to fix.

I've never had a white spring sachs but I hear they are OK

When you say 'the bottom eye' do you mean the bearing that the mounting bolt goes through, or the aluminium outer that the bearing is seated in? If it's the bearing, any shock-botherer worth their salt will have a replacement for not much money. If it's the aluminium outer, send it back pronto, if not quicker.
