Under no circumstances earth ANYTHING at the solenoid, sparks, burning and tears will be the result. If you mean bridging out the solenoid with a bluddy great screwdriver across the heavy terminals then fine go ahead but PLEASE make sure you don't accidentally touch ground.

Be warned, there will be sparks but be brave and firm
Yes, I meant bridging out the soleniod with a big screwdriver :smt001 I will try to be brave but I'm not looking forward to it. I haven't done this since my Mk1 escort wouldn't start back in the seventies (it scared the cr*p out of me then as well :smt005 )
TBH I can't think of anything else to do with the damn thing :smt013

Do the sparky test and we'll take it from there :smt002

If this has been already mentioned by another member please forgive me, been to pub again :smt003 , get a pair of jump leads, and pull your car up to your bike, pop the bonnet on your car and with car engine running connect the red(live) or + of your jump lead to your positive on your battery on your bike then the other end onto your positive on your car. DO NOT connect black - first. when you are happy that a good contact has been made put the negative( black) onto your car battery then put other end onto a clean bolt on your engine of your bike. this will boost the power in your battery and put a direct earth to your engine
step two ignition on try to start the bike, if it starts you have an earthing fault on your engine , disconect black cable first then red. if it doesnt start with a screw driver put it across your terminals of your starter solenoid with cables still connected, there will be a few sparks noyhing dramatic if it starts then your new solenoid is defective cheers blink :smt002

Rich, I'm probably around next Saturday if you want a hand. Give me a call if I can help.

Cheers

Good news.............................NOT!

Dave popped round today (Tweaker) to listen to the famous "clicking" which the bike was still doing even after re-fitting the starter motor. Dave shorted out the solenoid and voila..........we are now listening to the sound of "whirring" when the starter button is pressed

So I reckon (I know) the sprag has failed, something must have been slighty jammed up within the sprag mechanism and by finally getting full power to the starter motor it released. I'm surprised because it has given no prior noises or indication that the sprag was about the let go, but there you go its knackered!

Big thanks to Dave for popping over (always great to see you mate) and big thanks to everyone else who kindly offered their advice as well.

Got to say I didn't think it would be the sprag! :smt013

Now to weigh up whats the next step forward.........repair it or????

Worked out a route for tomorrow, based on your suggestions, and fitted the 15T this evening so it'll be interesting to feel the difference :smt003

Good to catch up with you and Lisa today and you know where I am if you need 'owt.
