I also subscribe to PB for the project bikes and the 2 strokes they used to feature ( secret other life !). Since Tim Thomson returned to Bike it has started to change away from what I prefer.
How they could say the riding position was ok on the SP1 is beyond me, it is also a right porker weight wise - no mention in the article. I have ridden one and it was far too cramped and focused for me. How they could compare a Falco to it it ?? An old style Mille would have been more appropriate. As for the Duke ? Suits me that the Falco will remain off the radar. I accept that you have to fettle it to get the best from it which is part of the attraction for me as a "fiddler"

Bit late here, but
I don't normally buy PB (or any bike magazine - £4 for adverts - no thanks
) and the usual article raves about a bike that someone has blagged some ex-WSB suspension, spent a further £5k+ on it and tells us how it's better than standard. Really!?!?!?
I picked up this issue as it had a Falco in it and expected the usual ego polish that I've got from any review I can remember, but got a bit of a shock!
The negative points they made have some foundation, with regard to weight and standard suspension, but comfort is subjective and it's the most comfy bike I've ever ridden at length (my 1200gs adv included).
It would've been good to see a dyno comparison between them, and I suppose the test was an interesting take on 3 different approaches to big v-twins. They were more bothered in the iconography of the SP-1 than anything. Falco's are ace and we know it.
The oddest thing about the very same magazine is an article where columnist Si Martin decries the Adventure Bike cult (another slap for me!) and describes the ideal motorbike - big V twin, 70lb-ft, comfy for two, good brakes and suspension.....
Sound like a bike anyone here can think of....?

Welcome to the site Patrick.
Yes, it sounds just like a bike I know and love.

I have been a reader of PB since 2008 and before that in the '90s too. It has always stood out as a much better mag than FB (max power for bikes), bike (dull group tests every month), ride (reviews of textiles and high vis) or MCN (nuff said). I recently bought the November 2001 issue with their review of the then new Falco, they praised it very highly then, but still called it practical. It was also put up against much more reasonable competition, namely the Buell X1 and Triumph Sprint ST. The aprilia won out on bhp and was under 8ft/lb down on the 1203cc ditch pump. They even said hat the stock Sachs shock worked well (shows how much shocks have moved on since then!).
"Best of the bunch is the aprilia. It does everything that you could want from a bike. It behaves well and has the least quirks. Long rides, short thrashes, long thrashes, the aprilia does the lot, it's all there.
The Falco is much more than a sports tourer and the term 'all rounder' does it scant justice. Understated styling combined with its potent V-twin motor make it a wolf in sheeps cliche."

The topic title is VERY apt as last night I watched an auction on Ebay end for a 2001 Falco, same year as mine but it had more mileage at 32K, Ohlins rear shock - front and rear engine crash bungs & Scott oiler among other good stuff.
A few scratches on the fairing but still very presentable - starting offer was £1300, auction ran for seven days, got 2(!) bids and sold for £1378 (!!!)
If this is the way things might go then I'll turn mine into a Trackbike and damn the consequences!
