ok

the key thing is going to be the front sub frame - if it is straight or easily fixed - i use that term advisadly as they are known to be buggers, then all is good

as for the paint - you are in North Island and therefore more likely to have a colour match paint shop close by - will cost a few dollars - around 350 - 500 UKp equivalent i think to do all those panels - the chin guard i would do myself with some rattle cans btw.....

the oil cooler is as above - personally I would go for the mille oil cooler with the connection tubes - have a play and they will fit - you may want to invest in some oil tubing and make your own up... or get a mille oil tank at the same time to make it very easy....

Reason for going mille is that there are a LOT more of them about and therefore parts are easier to get second hand

Be aware that you will loose about 250 ml oil capacity compared to your Falco oil tank - it is no biggie at all - just don't get carried away when filling it!
(I have measured the difference between the tanks and that was my finding.....)

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Chicks dig battle scars..

Buy it back, ride it with the gravel rash once youve repaired the bits that need to be fixed to make it rideable.

thanks guys.

its being taken today for a price up of work, so once they;ve decided to write it off they will offer it to me no doubt (already mentioned by assessor) and we'll take it from there.

Cheers.

Make sure to post up the must have's to get it going again, there's a few locally (by that I mean in Aus and NZ) that have parts, but as you are about to find out they come at a premium once they are below the equator.

So she is a write off... speaking tomorrow to them re: salvage... if I can be arsed!

So I'm definitely going to be selling a fair few bits n pieces if anyone is interested... mind you I will be shipping from NZ!

Will have a factory pro chip
Renegade air plate
Nice exhaust hangers (dont allow footpegs to be attached)
original falco exhausts
rear light
rear light surround
rear seat
falco bobbin things for abba stand
oil filter
those indicators that griff sells (bought them, never used them)
three clutch slave seals
ventura things (l brackets, grab handle, small and large racks)
two venture bags, hardly used (ok, not falco specific!)

and some other stuff once I've dug around the garage

There's a worrying number of Falcos being written off recently, most of which are still perfectly useable. At this rate they're going to be an endangered species.

Is it too early to be thinking about trying to re-manufacture certain parts, such as front fairing brackets and bodywork...?

I don't think it's an issue with the availability of spares but more to do with the cost of spares against the monetary value of the bike.

Are we actually compelled to accept insurance companies writing them off for cosmetic reasons or can we insist that they actually pay the standard price of spares to fix the things up?

Im not sure if anyone has mounted a legal challenge against an insurance company for declaring it to be' an unecomic repair' despite the fact that it is a straight forward repair.
They are all in it together, insurance companies using approved repairers who charge obscene amounts
I challenged an insurance repair job around 8ish years ago, hit up the arse when turning right, emergency stopped as van in front randomly started to reverse
my van came back with resprayed rear panel, new N/S rear light but new steering defect so i disputed the repair work done as Id fitted new steering rack, lower control arms both sides ect
The response, a copy of a £2,300 bill for work done, an engineers report saying steering rack incorrectly fitted as the steering wheel was about 10 degrees out when road wheels straight. they flew a guy down from Glasgow to photograph this
The steering problem turned out to be the differential got stuffed when I got hit up the arse with my wheels on full lock, brakes on.

That seems to have been a problem with Futuras over the last year or two, hence the worryingly small number left on the road. Please don't let this happen to Falcos as well.

They are getting back to me with a salvage price :)

Is there a rule of thumb for salvage prices? For example, 20% of market value/payout value etc?

I also wasnt aware of this, but since I've had a crash they need to deduct the entire annual premium from the payout, and I need a new insurance policy... wasn't aware this would be the case (I suppose I'm a naive crash virgin!).

Anyhow I have got a top price for the value of the bike (what I insured it for, $8k), so now I'll negocitate a rock bottom salvage value.

I've also sourced a near-identical Falco on a ebay-type site here in NZ... I'm tempted to get it, hammer them down on price, then have one falco for the road and one for the track.

I love the Falco so much... it pains me not to keep it.

Watch this space.

So I've heard back from them.

Here's a breakdown:

Left muffler & brackets - $1750!!!! Bloody hell
Sidestand assembly - $357!!!!
Oil cooler and pipes - $965 & $155!!!!
left lower fairing - $1045
left side fairing - $90
fuel tank - not available
left mirror - $110
headlamp fairing - $1720
Front wheel - $2290
front guard - $530
left tail section $990
handlebar weights $38
indicators $170

So there we have it... no structural damage, just all cosmetic (sort-of). The only problem is the rear subframe thats had the bolts ripped out but as one of you guys said I can just put a bolt through to hold the exhaust.

The bike has been de-registered so I will have to go through that process... and probably check the frame isn't bent but I don't think so given the relatively light, yet costly, cosmetic damage.

So they have also offered a salvage price of $2750 but I have already written back and said I'll pay $1500 - lets see what happens.
