i think people will support you doing it as you're a forum member so can't imagine a couple of quid would make a huge issue, as long as you don't do them at a loss...just my opinion! :smt023

sticking throttle

#18 Post by LEEMAN » Tue Feb 22, 2011 6:18 pm

sorry, another question, apologies for posting 2 in the same day.

My throttle would appear to be sticking. Twist and it will hold at the same speed as opposed to decelerate in true Vtwin fashion.

I noticed that when i used my heated grips the throttle became a bit more sticky and I had assumed it was the heat on the rubber but not the heated grips (Oxford) no longer work and the throttle has become stiff and sticky - dont know if they are related.

any ideas?

bit of WD liberally placed anywhere?

undo the bar end - then try it

if it then works as it should, then trim the end of the grip with a stanley knife - carefully..... like 1mm

i had to do that with my oxford grips

if that is not it, post again

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Not sure, I've never machined titanium before so I don't know what it's like, except expensive

Loosen the 2 allen bolts holding the throttle line assembly on the rhs grip, and slightly move the whole thing towards the starter switch and re tighten when ok.

And start your own thread :smt019

It's a pain in the arse. And an expensive one at that.. Unless you're willing to spend lots on tooling (carbide tips.. lots of um) then I wouldn't bother. Most titanium parts cost so much because they're a bugger to make..lol..

Anyway.. Why bother.. The weight saving for parts so small is going to be hardly noticeable.. :smt003

Lol, there's not telling some people.

I have carbide tips at home so I could give it a go, not gonna though. (unless my mate buys some titanium for the weight saving he's doing to his bike). The question I wonder is what's it like for threading with a die?

Anyway, I'll keep you all informed on the progress of these. Should be simple enough though

Single point screw cutting is better.. Difficult with a die as it has the tendency to smear or stick to the tool.. Carbide thread cutting tip on the lathe will do a better job.. Don't be afraid to take loads off in one pass either.. Taking off tiny amounts isn't advisable. A cut of less than 0.15mm will cause problems with heat build up. Titanium isn't a very good heat conductor, so all the machining heat tends to stay on the cut face and the cutting tool.. Look to take off between 0.25mm and 0.50mm per pass.. :smt002

Oh. and run it slowwwwwwwww :smt001

Ok, I have ordered all the parts I need and will starting knocking up some sets when the bits arrive anyone who definitely wants some give me a shout, either PM or in this thread.

The only question I would ask is would you prefer nylon or stainless washers, I ordered stainless and then realised nylon may be better for the tank ones.

I can do them for £8 a set delivered in the UK mainland, anyone outside the UK wanting some will have to give me a shout to get postage (or more likely source them locally).
