took the bike out for a blast on tuesday - nothing special, just 100 mile thrash around
Parked the bike in the shed, and went back to it today, thursday.
Opened up the shed and could smell petrol....
I saw a small pool of fluid - petrol around the side stand. Moved the bike out on to the drive and popped it on the side stand - started the bike and noted that there was more fuel coming out than previously.
hmmm - bugger I thought
went for a quick blast - ie to get more fuel - I notoiced that there was a minimal or no leak when the bike was bolt up right - but as soon as it went on the side stand - more leak - and definitly worse with the engine running
so - any thoughts before i start stripping things down?
(Am hoping it is just a loose hose but... I doubt it some how!)
Hi Aladinsaeuk, you state the leak is worse when on the side stand, this would indicate the fuel is coming from the overflow pipe? this vents near the side stand in front of the oil filter.
The cause of this could be a number of things the tank is over filled or the vent pipe is blocked.
Also check the fuel pipe union with the tank there is a crimped clamp here that can come loose. You would need to swing back the tank or remove the rear fixing for access but any leak here would be caught by the overflow tray and exit the pipe at the stand. It's my opinion the fuel pump flange would be unlikely to leak unless its been removed recently and the rubber sealing ring was damaged. The worst problem is the internal tank pipe's are damaged or cracked allowing fuel to leak into the overflow. I have read some tanks become damaged due to pushing the fuel filler nozzle to far into the tank whilst filling causing damage, did you fill up on your ride?
Hope this helps.
PS also check the QD coupling "quick release connector" left side of the bike in case it's leaking a new one can be bought from http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/

well, temporary fix done
I am still getting another tank, just in case, but untill that arrives, I have managed to do a fix that may help others in a similar plight
very simple - the o ring for the fuel pump is a very tight fit.
removed it, and cleaned out the base where it should fit
applied a petrol resistant hardening sealant (Yep - araldite rapid)
that lifted the o ring by an amount - say 1.5 mm
let it go off, then refit o ring, that is now proud by aforementioned amount, but still a sung fit
refit fuel pump, doing diagonal tightening to 7.5 n
connected every thing up
swore vehmentantly as i could see fuel leaking.... tightened fuel line up correctly and now Bob is married to your father's sister
ran the bike for 20 minutes with no obvious leak seen
And no, I did not do the work, another person did - so hats off to Deano for a prime piece of fettling :)
