I did think about trying for compensation, but fairly quickly dismissed the idea. I'd need to find out who dropped the offending gunk, then get them to admit liability, and then provide evidence of damage. If I lived over there I might have a go. But doing it from best part of 1000 miles away - don't think it's gonna fly.

I've already cleaned up the leather jacket I was wearing, and it looks like the kevlar-lined jeans escaped the vile muck, but I'll only really know the next time I wash them. The shirt I was wearing under the jacket has a big hole in the back...

The stuff that caused the damage is definitely acidic. The reaction with bicarb of soda proved that beyond all doubt.
