Been a while since I posted here so a quick line on oil....
Just drained the oil on my SL in readiness for winter, quite surprised to learn there is a coarse metal filter to check inside the oil tank? Mine was clean as a whistle, manual says you need to remove the special banded clip on the oil line on the top of the oil tank.
Pull the hose off and then a socket is needed, 27mm I think as access is poor to remove a nut with long cage into the tank and the metal filter. You will need a jubilee clip, for 22mm bore pipe to complete the job.
As an aside, I thought I was running the same 10/40 oil as my Duke but my book says Full syn 15/50, so a quick look on Ebay shows Smith & Allen in Darlington selling Shell Helix at great prices (inc free delivery) that get MUCH better for buying in bulk....
I made a best offer of £80 on 4 x 4L bottles, with free delivery and they accepted! More still available here:

Mines on its way, K+N oil filter ready to go in and then - job done.
Didnt realise there is an option of fitting a longer oil filter (good post/spot) even my Ducati oil filter is much larger than the Falco, having said all that I've had a good look in my old filter and its pretty clean really.
PS - Hiya, Paul - fancy seeing you here ;)

Many of us here use opie oils - we get a forum discount
Also, some of us use 10/40 semi .... Aprilia have said it is specifically for bikes that show signs of clutch slip but - its cheaper ;)

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...
15/50 Fully synth is fine for many of the later bikes but some of the early Falcos will not tolerate fully synth (clutch slip)iconic944ss wrote:

The 15/50 oils recommended in the Falco User Manual are actually Semi-synth not fully-synth

I thought that as well but looking at the Agip website, the recommended TEC 4T oil showed up as fully synthetic???D-Rider wrote:15/50 Fully synth is fine for many of the later bikes but some of the early Falcos will not tolerate fully synth (clutch slip)iconic944ss wrote:

I guess I can always use the oil elsewhere but if I get slip the it might be a very expensive engine flush!!!

No it doesn't show as fully-synth.
It's either referred to as "synthetic-based" or "synthetic-fortified" - which translates to semi-synthetic.
That said, unless you have one of the older falcos, you should have no problem choosing to use fully-synth (I normally do). In fact, not all of the old ones object to it either.

A while ago I was reading about clutch failures on Falcos/Milles relating to the cush drive type coil springs on the rear of the clutch basket breaking up from the mounting plate and causing damage to the casings.
I noticed that all of the affected clutches were of a different type to mine (which is a black 2000).
I think it’s a logical conclusion that the earlier clutches were prone to slipping and were later redesigned (2001 on).
I would continue to use semi synth on the earlier clutches.
On the bright side – the earlier clutch appears not to spit out the spring retaining plate. As far as I can tell, the clutch assemblies are interchangeable

I am finishing a sprag clutch this weekend and i will be fitting a new filter and oil.
I have tried to find which oil filter fits that is a car one, i seem to remember a nissan micra filter fits but i can't find the year or engine size in the search function.
Does any one know which fits, this is the long filter!

Why not just fit the proper one rather than one from a car?blinkey501 wrote:I am finishing a sprag clutch this weekend and i will be fitting a new filter and oil.
