Right. I have been forced to go and read my instruction manual so I am not happy.
Typed as written,
'When the battery reaches approximately 14.3 Volts all four LEDs on the centre charge display illuminate, indicating a full charge. If the Battery Optimiser remains connected, it will automatically maintain a serviceable battery close to its fully charged capacity by continuing to charge at a very low rate (trickle charge). This method helps to prevent the damage from overcharging that can be caused by standard battery chargers.'
Dr Bike Optimiser. Less than 3 months old. Based on the Oxford Optimiser of a few years back which I used to have hooked up permanently too.
HTH.
Now I need a lie down. And if anyone lets on I read a manual there'll be trouble.

I'm right 98% of the time so why worry about the other 3%?

I think the Timer trick is done by people who have got wise to the fact that if they don't actually turn the charger off (rather than just disconnect it from the bike), when you come to plug the bike in to it again it won't start a new charge cycle but just continue the previous trickle charge.
For those rare occasions where you might leave the bike unused for a few days or even a week or two, then it's better to just leave it on and it will spend most of its time trickle charging as you want it to.
The point being that we have different scenarios here and there are different approaches for each.

The one I have is the Oxford Optimiser 600 and I have set it up so it is on the bike permanently i.e. wired onto the battery and the lead comes out onto the frame and the plug disconnects that way, it is a fused lead set up.
I will see whet happens to the lead when I start the bike it should be OK as alarms etc. use this kind of set up as well.
