Starter Solenoid upgrade anyone?

#1 Post by Blackranger68 » Sat Sep 03, 2011 3:45 pm

Right Im getting pissed off with this falco not wanting to start at the first hit of the starting button.

Firstly I have put in a new 14amp battery, its on an optimate charger, all terminals seem fine and clean and dry.

Switch the thing on and the volt meter on the dash says 13.7v before starting. Crank it over and it drops to 12.1volts, aventually it starts (cold start choke is on) and the volt meter in the dash goes up to 13.6volts

Now give it some revves and the volts in the dash say that its dropping to 10.8volts back off the throttle to an idle and the volts rise again to 13.6

Is this normal as i though that the more revves were on the volts should rise a little and not fall?

Any suggestions?

Im thinking that the starter solenoid is maybe not up to it anymore and would benefit from an upgrade of some sorts?????? any recomendations for the solenoid upgrade?

Regards

It might also be worth checking the fast idle lever is actually working. Mine had so much slack in the cable when I first got the bike it wasn't really doing anything.

Battery voltage should increase with revs until you get to about 5k (generally, not sure exactly with the Falco), so if yours doesn't seem to be then you'd best grab a multimeter and do the charging checks detailed in the manual.

Check your connections, especially at the battery terminals. if the voltage says it's dropping on revs, I'd guess that something is loose and is losing proper connection when the bike vibes on revs.

Of course, we all seem to have loose wiring on this forum... :smt002
