No, but being of Hinckley origins i would suggest two options, all you have to remember is M42/Coalville...Ibstock/A447

1) Take the M42 turn (East Midlands Airport) and come off at Coalville (A511)...nice fast road (3-4 miles), then right at roundabout onto A447, again a nice twisty A road, as you approach the outskirts of Hinckley there will be 'brown' signs for Mallory and it will be a left turn, will prob be less congested as most will be coming from Hinckley or Leicester direction

-only pass through a couple of smallish towns so you shouldn't get held up in traffic

2) Turn off M1 at J22 (go right under motorway) on A511 towards Coalville and after about 3-4 miles come to same roundabout above but turn left from this direction onto A447

Just before the left turn to Mallory there's a Texaco garage on right

For you information a small detour in towards Coalville will bring you to this bikers cafe if you wanted a break or hook up with someone to ride with (there are 'brown' direction signs from the roundabout (there's a petrol station, Morrisons, here too)

Hope this helps :smt001

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

So Mallory was a fun weekend. It was good to meet up with Hanna, Pete , Colin, Ralph, Jay, Will, Craig & Mrs Craig.
Having gone past Mallory on my way to the EMA earlier in the day when it was torrential rain with very black clouds all around, I was thinking twice about camping over on the Friday night. It brightened up a bit so I went down a couple of hours later than I had originally planned. Falco corner was immediately visible when I got there and there was space for me.
Friday night saw us wander down to the paddock area for a nose around and a beer or three. Colin and Ralph like a beer or four.........maybe more. Some brave talk, previous and recent track day experience and third party testimonials (Ralph),had me wondering whether a red one might actual be able to stay with a black one.

Up early the next morning to get scrutinised and a little nervous anticipation was like old times. I did a little last minute weight saving also by removing the tools, tyre sealant and other gubbin’s from under the seat. I left the carrier, tank over, gearing and suspension settings alone which I knew probably wouldn’t be optimal but it’s not a race and there’d be more than enough to deal with as it was.

Colin and Pete were out together mid morning, I had the last of the morning sessions and fortunately another booked mid afternoon. There were a lot of bikes on the track in each of the sessions and there were a contingent of “road bikes” entering from the paddock. So the speed differential was quite alarming to watch particularly given my last track excursion 25 years ago, had me taking to the grass and subsequently performing a few somersaults, to avoid someone I was lapping, who just did something strange.
Pete and Colin will maybe tell their tale but from where I was watching it was apparent that the red Falco was reasonably quick and the black one along with a quite few others, was taking part in the parade.

Finally it was my session and I didn’t get in line quick enough so I was towards the back of the various groups. For quite a few of them this was the second session of the day so they seemed to know where they were going from the start. It all seemed very busy and though I was able in a few places to give the Falco its head I wasn’t very confident. I was finding the Falco very fast particularly compared to the other bikes out there and when the Falco really got under way I was scared I was going to hit someone. Out of the hairpin it’d wheelie through second and I’d be getting into third and pitching into devil’s elbow trying to find a line that wouldn’t have me hitting someone when it was really screaming on the exit in 3rd or 4th with the front lifting again across a slight camber change. If I kept it on the power into the breaking zone well after the bridge there’d be another gaggle of bikes entering Gerrard’s queuing to get past someone so I’d be backing off early. There were some who overtook me and the rest of the queue, by just going around the outside but though I’d overtake one at a time I wasn’t confident enough to enter Gerrard’s at the right speed . Coming out was a blast though but again I had to be careful as the Falco on full chat was lifting the front across the camber change that washed you to the edge of the track while passing bikes like in a video game. The Esses were good and started to get a little bit of feel for it holding it tight and longer on the first apex to then blast it through the second onto the short straight to the hairpin. Again another gaggle of bikes and hard to decide where to point it so as not to ram someone. I got passed a few times in the session, there was a guy on an old fire blade who’d been out earlier who slipped past down the start finish strait and then went around some through Gerrard’s, while I tagged on the end of the queue. All too quickly it was over.

My second session was better as I was nearer the front to start with, however there were quite few who had gotten wise to that trick so having got there early to be near the front, we were waiting around for about 20 minutes all geared up in the sunshine..... feeling about to pass out is not the best way to start things off. So near the front of the road bike side of the track but they let out the paddock contingent just before I got there. I was able to get three or four laps in, overtaking one or two here another there and getting a little rhythm going. I still wasn’t getting into Gerrard’s anywhere near fast enough to make it work or driving around it or anywhere else, fast enough for that matter but after those first couple of laps I started meeting the tail end, so again had to be careful where I gave the Falco some stick. The Falco is fast and in a straight line I think the fastest thing out there, now that really was a different experience. Maybe if could relax a little more I’d start to ride properly maybe just needs a little familiarity, more practice time.....

Saturday night saw us watching the stunt bikes, having a few beers even a very little bop. Sunday was hot, then a little cool but the rain stayed off and we were able to watch how it should be done. The stars and characters I’ve watched many a time from the bank above Devil’s elbow. One or two of them were getting the front up a little too, as they came out of Devil’s elbow across the camber change, one or two were then not backing off but just ripping it right up and mono wheeling it down the strait. And as for queuing round Gerrard’s or taking them one at a time through the Esses they weren’t doing that either.
I went to look at the Velo today, he seems ok with the idea of me racing it next year. Wife doesn’t know how I could afford to start racing again, thinks it sad that I want to go back to the past rather than developing other interests. I also don’t know how I could afford it, I couldn’t when I was younger either and I should be tying prop up my pension fund about now, but I think I can make some space for the Velo in the garage and get it running.....Oh and what other interests?

Sounds as though a great time was had - I'm only sorry that I couldn't make it to see everyone - especially as few from the forum live closer to Mallory.
