Derestriction & Aftermarket Chip

I've just been checking the ECU connector blocks with regard to my current issues. Hishy mentioned it might be a good idea to make sure the cut wires on the derestriction mod were well insulated and not grounding out

So I went to check them and low and behold "all" the wires to the ECU are intact. It doesn't appear to have been derestricted in the usual manner. But it does have the SL chip fitted and has a "Hook" airkit and the bike goes very well indeed.

So my question is.. does the SL chip overide the lack of the usual derestriction process? or should I snip the wire as detailed on Kens site?

Could this be the source of my "other" problem I wonder???

If it's connected, it runs on the restricted map. When you snip the wire it then goes for the full chat firebreathing map.. on the standard chip. Thats how Ive always interpreted it.
I would imagine the connected wire will then make it will override the SL chip.. but I could be wrong.. or else it's fighting with the SL mapping as it's an 'aftermarket' chip

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Given that you're very happy with the bike 'as is', I'd suggest doing the snip, but fitting male and female bullet connectors on the exposed ends so they can be re-joined if things don't quite work as planned.

That way you've covered all eventualities.

What year is yours? I know you've looked at the Derestriction page.. Im wondering now re-reading it whether youve had a 2002+ Mille Lump dropped into it... Normally that wire is cut a long time ago... Maybe it's had a new engine shoved in it?

Yup its a wierd one Tim. It's a 2004 Falco and I fully expected to see the wire cut but no. To the best of my knowledge its on its original engine. The MOT's & Service record all add up to this and the engine mounts and loom look untouched although I haven't checked the engine No tbh

I'm gonna cut the wire and see what happens

OK .... as has been said, snipping the wire selects between maps - the standard chip having 2 maps in it.

The question really is whether the SL chip has more than one map and snipping will make any difference.
Logic suggests that it will only have the one map as it is tailored to run with a particular set up (SL cans which would be expected to run with a de-restricted airbox). Therefore my expectation is that both memory blocks have the same map and snipping the wire will make no difference.

If it were me, I'd snip it - and either fit a switch so I had the option of easily switching between maps on any chips you may fit that do contain more than one - or do what mangochutney suggests with the connectors. Whatever you do, make sure that any loose ends are well insulated and can't touch other wires or metal bits and pieces.

Well had I looked further I could have us all some time :smt013

I removed the ECU and its tray to find that the wire is indeed cut but further away from the connector and out of sight
