New Member - now about Power Commanders?

#1 Post by ReggieGasket » Tue Aug 11, 2009 8:05 am

Hi everyone, haven't even thrown my leg over my Falco yet, but looking forward to it! Pleased to see there's a forum or two.

The Falco I've bought has a Power Commander and Scorpion cans. Just wondering if there are any views on maps etc. The guys claims the bike was set up on a dyno and is showing 122bhp, which sounds fine. However, I want to use the bike for long commutes, so I need good fuel economy. Just wondering if the PC affect fuel economy and whether standards cans or a different map might improve economy. Oh course, if it goes like stink, I may chosse to ignore mpg :smt002

Hi & welcome
When I fitted my PC111 the tank range improved from 138 upto 180, so no worrys there. Also improvement in the midrange & much smoother at lower revs.

Enjoy :smt006

Standard airbox, K&N filter

138 miles was the best I got before the PC111 (to empty), 180 the best since, with about .5 litres left in tank.

See, Im convinced the open airbox design lowers fuel efficiency but im still trying to work out why, perhaps more airflow means more fuel needed to maintain the air/fuel ratio. I get 90 miles to the reserve light WITH a PCIII map (but I suspect XXX dealer did a really crap job - its booked in with Steve Jordan m/c to get remapped)

Welcome to the site Reggie :smt006
Nice to have you join us.

I have not used a PC, I just have Beowulf Titanium race cans with the baffles left in and a K&N filter in the standard airbox.
This has cured the 5k flat spot, (where it goes weak for the drive by EEC noise tests), and it pulls better in the mid range. Sounds great as well but a bit noisey even with the baffles in!
Economy is no worse than before when all was standard, i.e. usually averages around 40 mpg or sometimes a bit more on normal "fun rides", (I am a bit calmer these days as I am an old git). If you push it hard it will go down into the 30s, but the main thing with the Falco is that you don't need to thrash it to the limiter to have fun. You can keep the revs down to 6k or a bit more and quick shift through the box using the torque, if you are on long runs/commutes, and the mpg will go higher. I have managed 50 mpg on a long relaxed, but not slow run.
Can't say much about commuting in serious traffic, as I have never done that with the Falco, really heavy traffic could obviously bring the mpg down significantly.
Don't think the PC III will change things much unless you hammer it, but as you say the pleasure will be worth it!
Changing the front sprocket for a 15 tooth, (to gear it down), will make it more flexible and easier to use in traffic and allow you to use 6th gear more on a long commute. (see other threads).
Enjoy the bike, you made a great choice.

I should point out that when I first fitted the PC111 the consumption went up, a lot, and nobody could ride behind me without getting dizzy with the fumes, overfueling badley. Tried a few downloadable maps without much success so, off to a local dyno, and £110 later it was purrrfect.

As for air/fuel mix, you cannot burn lots of fuel without lots of air, so, more air = more burnt fuel.

My Falco has a PCIII, Beowulf cans and an carbon airbox conversion, spirited riding gets it down to around 100miles to a tank, steady riding she does about 130. Set up by JHS in Bristol she fuels beautifully, from nowt to flat out! Lovely stuff.
1st Italian bike. 1st V-twin, loving it!

HI RG, welcoma in. Seems to be a spate of fresh meat these days, excellent.

Counter to what Howard suggests I'd be looking to keep the 16 tooth front sprocket. I'm assuming your long commutes involve long top gear streches, where the lower gearing with tht 15 tooth will burn more fuel.

It's probably not a huge difference, but worth considering (have a check on what sprocket you have on).

I used to commute into London (15 miles) on my Falco in both std and modified trim and it made bugger all differrence to the fuel economy 90 to 100 miles to the light. On bad boys trips oop north to Halifax (no motorways and plenty mucho handle abuse) miles to light would be anything from 130 to 150, again the mods made no noticeable difference.

You could look at chucking in a set of irridium plugs which seem to improve mileage (not sure how, but it's been noticed by more than one on here, me included) and thee're good for another 5 at the wheel :smt002

Thanks for that. Have now ridden the Falco. Wow. It's a while since I rode a big sports bike and it feels very strong. The commute is mostly motorway, so will need to see the mpg before doing anything. I believe the PCIII is set at Fast Road, so we'll see. It seems to have a step at around 6k, but I haven't had chance to wind it up yet :smt003

Will stick a DB on as I can't see any taller options for motorway blasting.
