If a soft link is to give up it will presumably be due to one of the two rivets failing. Two softlinks mean Four rivets and therefore double the chances.

No it doesn't. The thing about a chain being as strong as the weakest link isn't just a saying its a fact of Engineering.
Now OK, I'm an Engineer and I do know that it's not 100% quite as simple - there is a bit of a probability thing going on related to where weak links happen to be when you get shock loadings - but it's pretty damned close and as long as it's riveted properly there should be no significant issue. Of the huge number of Falco riders on here, how many have snapped a chain at the soft link that we all ride with? OK Bigun had one snap (dunno whether that was at the soft link) but it's not something we tend to worry about all the time.

Well if we can agree that the softlink is the weakest link...
...and that the chain is as weak as the weakest link....
then the chain is as weak as the softlink....
times 2.
I haven't heard of any failing either and I have almost total faith in them but I still wouldn't introduce another into the equation.

Fausto, logically, the chain will break it the weakest link, right? And you cannot have two WEAKEST links, right?
So, back on track, anyone with chain leftovers?
No, I won't let it go!

I totally agree Sabestian.
It's just a case of which of the 2
weaker links is the
weakest
Anyway - I quit now and I wish you luck with your link hunt.

So, you're saying that by creating two weak links you push your luck, because one of them must be weaker then the other, and if you put just one link, that weaker one - potentially - would not exist? I get it now. :D
