So far I've ended up fitting a helicoil to the tank mounting in the headstock, replacing knackered head bearings, oil change and filter, dropping the forks to address corrosion in the fork-legs, draining the cooling system to remove radiators to get access to the totally clogged oil cooler and replace the fractured coolant level indicator on the expansion tank.

Other than that, the job's going well.

Once you're in there you might as well... However I usually only do what I really need to do and then regret it six months later.

I decided to "tidy my Falco up a bit" this time last year and ended up stripping it down to the frame and doing a full re-build. It was bought very cheap and had been stood for 5 years.

If I'd had any idea how bad it was underneath everything I wouldn't have gone anywhere near it :)

My thoughts exactly Tipper, but then again I'd have probably done it anyway lol..

It's ironic to think though that the coolant pipe has been broken for ages, but it's never overheated or shown signs of leakage, and the extent to which the oil cooler is clogged might suggest that it wasn't doing any cooling at all..

Sod's Law applies to most things most of the time....
What ever can go wrong will go wrong at the worst possible time,
sorting one problem often reveals many more.
I do not regret giving up my job as a mechanic about 15 years ago when everything went to 'common rail'

And to think, the bike didn't look in that bad condition when it was parked on your drive.

Just to chip in, my nemesis is the 3mm allen key, I have about 5 and can never find one.

yuppers ... now the rads are both off, along with the oil tank and all the mounting brackets which were bent about 25mm to the left, presumably following his accident.

The worst job though has to have been picking the concreted and baked road sh!te out of the oil cooling rad though - the farking stuff's set solid and is a right @rse to pick out of the fins.

Hopefully it will all be back in some shape resembling a Falco in the next couple of days...
