Weekend maintenance, but worth it!

#1 Post by Dalemac » Sun Aug 09, 2015 11:31 pm

Well, it has been a rather long weekend working on the bike for me, all of Saturday and most of Sunday :)

Finally got round to replacing the leaky fuel tank. While it was off i decided to remove the airbox, change the plugs and check the valve clearances - all ok though i suspect next time they will be out of acceptable tolerances.

when taking our the old plugs, i discovered that the rear cylinder is running sweet as a nut, but the front plugs were fouled, so i suspect rich running. Adjusted the trim pots on the ECU, bringing the mixture own on the front cylinder. (Forza chip). Think it can come down a bit more after riding it.

Discovered some hairline cracks on the inlet rubbers - not completely dead yet but i'll need to find replacements for next time. Also broke yet another spark plug cap, decided i will get the aftermarket replacements after the move, as well as new oxford saturn indicators, to replace the cheap Chinese ones i boght while at uni, which fankly have passed their sell by date.

Managed to remove the gear lever adjuster shaft from the gear change brackets which was previously not adjustable on the spline side as it had siezed. The shaft is slightly bent, that will be replaced soon, but now at least i can properly adjust it and it changes gear quite nicely now.

Put it all back together, gave it a good clean, and still had some time for a quick evening run out on the bike. It feels like a completely new beast, the power and the speed rush is insane, but she is nicer than ever low down. I can't remember the last time when riding it felt as good as this. Still no power wheelies though! Didn't burst into flames though like i was expecting, which is a bonus!

Next major thing on the list is the mille swingarm conversion and a complete refurb of the maxton shock. I've had the bike for 6? years and never touched it, god knows how long it was left untouched before i bought it. I do have a receipt for it dated 2001. I wouldn't be surprised if it hasn't been rebuilt since. Definitely feels a little wallowey currently.

There is nothing like working hard to do something and then being rewarded for it at the end!

Hopefully this work will get me through to mid-october where i will have a new place and a nice big garage to work on the bike with :) In the mean time i have to start packing stuff into boxes, so i have to condense as much of the garage stuff down as possible. I can barely move in there at the moment, so that is going to be a challenge!
