fag lighter

#1 Post by Foxstein » Sun Jun 22, 2014 2:31 pm

No not for lighting fags :smt007
Just wondered if it was possible to fit a fag lighter socket to the Falco so you can plug in phone charger etc. Would it affect the charge rate whilst riding. Would be handy to fit phone or sat nav to bike. Has anyone done it?

Fit a small fuse inline with the positive in case something shorts it out

Yup, just make sure it's the right one as optimates have used a couple of different plugs over the years.

I did this while I was touring around so I could charge my phone as no power in my tent lol. But however, I took it off as it did drain the battery while riding, I stopped somewhere and nearly didn't get going again as the batt had gone flat, that was riding for miles, as in a tank full, no batt problems previous, phone charging away...stopped for fuel and uh oh, turning over so slow and then the dash reset etc etc, thought okay it's just one of those moments but it did it again at the next fuel stop. Unplugged charger rode on and never had anymore problems. Maybe I was just unlucky. Give it a try tho, I'd be interested to see if anyone else had the same problems.

I've got the optimate fitting, does USB only.

Had it plugged in overnight last night, bike started fine this morning. But, phone wouldn't charge first thing, I guess cos it cut out when the voltage dropped (so at last it didn't drain the battery)

Bit pricey though

There is an optimate to lighter socket one, just need to add a lighter socket to whatever you need widget. I've only used mine a couple of times and that was while riding. It worked ok to keep the sat nav topped up.

Here it is on their website with a link at the bottom of the page to the one with the other plug.

Yep, sorry I wasn't very clear. Wasn't suggesting that Optimate only do one that is USB only, just that I've got the USB-only version (as the only stuff I want to charge is USB). The lighter socket one seems to be a direct-to-battery one, whereas the USB one has a bit more trickery to it (my concern being any voltage spikes from dodgy rectifier/regulators might fry my phone or other device!)

I have fitted one of these to several bikes including the now departed Falco :smt010 and never had any problems with the battery. The consumption of a satnav or phone charger shouldn't overtax a healthy battery/alternator. I did, however, always keep it hooked up to an Optimate when in the garage.

I've 2 on my Falco. Most things you are likely to run use much less power than heated grips (for example)

I bought the socket in Maplins, soldered on some fittings and have it permanently zip tied to the pillion seat support. Good idea to put a fuse on it. I put a cheapo iPhone charger in when I need it and feed the bendy cable all the way to the car mount that sticks nicely to the tank.
Much nicer to put a permanent feed up front someday running from an ignition supply but I'll save that for when/if the old git runs again.

I got an Optimate O-102 usb charger which connects to my already-fitted Optimate battery charger.

It cuts out if battery volts drop below 12.4v so cant run it flat, which is handy. Plus 2m of cable to take it from battery to bars easy. Bit pricey at £25 though.

Maybe a fag-lighter one is better, as any car phone charger has a fag-lighter to usb connector, so you could use it for both types of device.

Plus you can spark up a tab on your ride home. Best to fit an ash tray as well though.... Think M&P do them for the Falco....
