Thanks to blinkey501 who has helped me out with a replacement RSV engine. Getting the old one out was easy - made easier by a number of bolts not having been replaced previously - only one nut on the rear exhaust but oddly it was the one which was most difficult to get to. Not that difficult with a universal joint, a six point socket and a few extensions.
Getting the new one in looks more difficult as I am jacking it up into place with a trolley jack and its difficult to get it lined up. Given up for a while but will get back to it this evening.
Non-Starting Falco after engine swap

Well hopefully the last post on this subject - but probably now! Today I actually got the bike started and it seems to run OK. Still need to change the oil and filter for good measure and put proper coolant in it rather than just water but it sounds fine (to me) and other than quite a lot of smoke from it burning off oil etc that was on the engine casings/exhaust from fitting I'm pretty happy so far.
Thanks for all of the help and advice - I'm sure I will have plenty of other questions that need asking and I'll stay an active member on the forum as hopefully my experiences may help others. I've learnt more about the bike by having to experiment and swap out the engine than I ever would any other way. I'm going to do a little more tidying up as I go - cable ties and ensuring that all bolts are nipped up tight.

So - you're running stock Falco ECU at the moment?
I was hoping my RSV swap would go effortlessly but the thing runs terribly (see my post re: Briggs and Stratton).
I'm putting the old Falco throttle bodies back on tomorrow, if that resolves it then at least I'll know it's not the cam timing out.
Last day I have a garage tomorrow too - then it's back to working outside!

Must admit I'm not entirely sure at this time what ecu is fitted. The one I have has "RSV" written in white marker on it so it may have been swapped at some stage. I haven't opened it up to check yet. I am using the original throttle bodies as they were still connected to the tank and looked cleaner!
When I compared to the rsv throttle bodies to be honest they looked identical so not sure if either I already had rsv items or maybe there is no difference. Always difficult when you don't know the starting point.
When I had the wrong generator on it wouldn't start at all so I don't think that is your problem. Sounds more like mine did when the cam sensor was miles out. I could just about get it to start but it was terrible when it ran backfiring and spitting back etc. I would doubt this is your problem but may be worth a look.

Same Throttle Bodies
OK the Edwards rep came with a set of 57mm TBs in the kit that could be swapped with the 51s and Gen 2 bikes have 57mm TBs - but virtually all Falcos amd Milles use the same 51mm TBs
The only other sets that you might come across are 54mm (basically bored out 51mm TBs). They are hit and miss as the conversions are not always well done and the butterflies aren't always a good fit - in which case they idle at silly (high) rpm.
