Falco Rear Shock... again...

#1 Post by Obiwan Kenobi » Tue Oct 29, 2013 10:54 am

OK, so firstly, I have searched and got some good info together from the site.

I need to replace my shock as its the standard one and the bike has done 20k so those things together mean its probably as much use as a nuns chuff.

The used RSV replacement units are rare it seems and will need a refresh before fitting anyway, so I am thinking new.

I don't want to muck about with changing dogbones or triangles or linkages.

The Ohlins unit 46PRCL is a bit pricey for me at around £650 new.

My thoughts are to go for one of these....

I have used Nitron on bikes before and find them good kit at a good price. Just wondering of anyone else has fitted one?

Or anyone got a new direct-replacement shock from anywhere else recently that is a decent price and a decent product. I like to go on recommendations.

Cheers,

Dave

I got a Wilbers unit early last year, £350 all in. Local shop fitted for me for nothing so that helped but I can say it is a good piece of kit and fitted straight on no hassle at all.

Paddy has a Nitron on his bike. I think his has separate compression and rebound settings but as long as you can live with those not being separate it looks like a pretty good buy.

Unlike the wilbers pictured above (and I know wilbers are good and Revs racing are excellent - use Revs myself), the nitron has ride-height adjustment.

From what I've picked up (though not through personal experience) is that nitron make good shocks but can be a bit of a PITA if you want to deal with them to service them. If that is a problem, it should be solved by getting it serviced elsewhere

I sourced a later model sachs shock and linkages for £60 and then £148 for a service.

It now has ohlins internals and has full adjustment. A baragin at just over £200

I don't want to mess around with used shocks, servicing them etc if I can help it.

Nitron do a street shock at £329 which looks like the Wilbers one....

... but the sport shock looks better value with more adjustment.

Heard good reports of Hyperpro too. They do a replacement shock for about £390....

I have heard a few good reports on Hyperpro.
These cheapish Nitron shocks have just been introduced recently. You do not get too much adjustment, but they build it specifically for you (weight) and your bike, effectively it is customised for you with not too much adjustment after that.
Does not sound too bad, the high spec Niron units are very good, so this should be OK.
Just looking at the Hyperpro link, it looks like they have the same idea with their Sport version.

Hagon also do two varieties, though one seems cheap and one seems expensive....

http://www.hagon-shocks.co.uk/catalog/c ... x?TypeID=M

Looks to as though Hagon, Nitron, Wilbers and Hyperpro all provide a basic shock for around £300 to £330 and a Sports shock for around £350 to £400.

Maybe I'll just go with whatever colour of spring matches my leathers best..... :smt004

Nitron, Wilbers or Hyperpro I'd be happy to put on my bike and seem very well matched in terms of price and performance. Not so Hagon... I really don't think Hagon are anything like the build quality or performance of the other three.

Cheap they might be; a bargain they are not...

Nope, Paddy has a Maxton. I've got the Nitron, not the basic one but not the top-end one either, so it's got rebound & compression adjustment. I've found it spot on - but, I've never twiddled with it, it's on minimum ride-height (which is still higher than the stock shock), sharpened up the steering and lost a wallowy feeling when on the power out of corners. Not quite the best buy on my Falco, but certainly a good upgrade.

But, wasn't cheap as many have identified, but cheaper than the Ohlins and the Maxton units

Ah yes you are quite correct!

I was fooled by both companies cunningly ending their names in "on"

I fitted my old WP unit to Hanna's was a few years ago but was around 350 quid

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

I presume that £350 you charged her was a special family rate ..........

I bought a new hagon rear shock to replace the shock on my Honda hornet and front progressive springs. I found it to be excellent for a budget replacement but then anything is over a worn out shock. It still looks like the day it went on and has been on years also still works as well as my ass can tell going over bumps etc. I've never seen the other shocks up close so I can't compare build quality but it seems good to me.

As there isn't much in it between street and race shock pricewise, go for the race spec.
Nitron and Hyper look pretty good for built to spec, I want one !
