Knocking Noise...

Hi all,

Went for a run up to Rothbury and surrounding area, on the way home a knocking/tapping noise materialized under the tank :smt010

Took it too a local ducati technician who said it could be the "Mechanical Decompressor!" has gone :smt017 Rang my local ducati shop who use to be an aprilia dealer who said their mechanics have never changed one before WTF!

So, does anyone know what that bit is on the engine please, so I can tell my dealer what part it is. While he is in the depths of my engine, would renewing the shimes on my tappets be a good idea as well? Told me it could take a week too diagnose the exact fault :smt013 You aren't gonna work on my bike for a week methinks, but, he may charge me for it :smt017

You're being fed bollocks. The Rotax motor hasn't got such a thing

Was the performance affected (other than you no doubt backing off a bit) ?

And a week to diagnose? Fek right off!!! 5 minutes with a screwdriver and a torch and then a further hour with a bit of process of elimination..

Renewing the shims? meeeeh.. Check them maybe..

hmmm .. well Ive had a quick look at the parts in the rotax and as far as i can see its not got a Mechanical De compressor!" :smt017
my job ? i build engines for a living ,, all classic ,early man stuff but out off about 300 or so engines I've never found one

prob cam chain or tappets

I've heard of the balancer shaft causing a knock. The clutch can also rattle a bit so does it go away when you pull the clutch in? Other than that there have been loose bolts on the rotor. But Mechanical Decompressor never heard of such a thing. Ok the Velo had a decompressor that was I suppose mechanical but that's stretching a point.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies so far, I was thinking he was talking twoddle. Yes tony, that said person who has DIT in sunderland. Knew he was pulling my chain, when he said a week to diagnose a noise :smt018

As for not having the damn mechanical decompressor!!! Flippin Numpty on the advice off him.

A mechanic who I know is popping round after work today to have a listen while on the paddock stands. So, he should be able to shed some proper thought and experience on the job :smt002

Let you know how I get on gents....

almost up there with the chap on AF1 who was told by someone following him that his bike smelled as though it was "running a bit lean" :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

Hope you get it sorted Greg .... got to be some knock if you can hear it over the din of those Two Brothers cans

He is fast getting a reputatation as a complete knob, a friend of mine swears by him but I have heard nothing but bad stuff from all others who have ever dealt with him.

...and remember the guy who swore blind his Falco was a V4 because of the 4 spark plugs - priceless

Hi all,

Well, had a good mate come round who is a mechanic for local council and rides a few bikes too boot! Lifted tank and found the fuel vacuum pipe was loose on the housing :smt013 So, not getting the right fuel in and one plug was held in with three thread turns :smt009

Had some silicon around it, so, had been "worked on" before. To be fair I didn't even wiggle it before now and when I got it dyno'ed the chap didn't even lift the tank when I recall.....

Used some Q Bond on the connection after cleaning it up. Puty some old normal plugs in for now. Until my iridium one's arrive in the post. Local ducati/aprilia dealer wanted £19 per plug :smt018 Got some for £6.53 with free p+p.

She runs with purpose now and can feel a ttoally different power delivery :smt003 Fit new plugs and some new BT023's this week, then she will be sorted for another spell...
