The FAQs
http://cycle-ergo.com/FAQ.html do mention it's not the most accurate of tools, but as a ready reckoner, I dont reckon its too bad.
I know as a result of this that I wont be able to touch the floor on an Africa Twin..

I posted this link up a few days ago on the AF1 forum, I have used it a few times to judge height and the only let down is what you just pointed out, it doesn't take into consideration the width of the seat.
