News and advice sought

#1 Post by Aladinsaneuk » Mon Jun 11, 2012 9:21 am

Some of you may already be aware but there is sign of movement in the swamps

All being well Hanna and myself are leaving Bungay, (Suffolk so Hare lips, hunched backs and dribble a lot) to move to Hempnall (Norfolk so 6 fingers per hand, webbed feet and everyone is called BOR) over the next week or so

Now - first things first - as we will be in rural norfolk, we will have no internet access for a few weeks - so play nicely :)

More importantly, we have to sort the driving licences out..... so, whats the best way of ensuring taht we both keep our motorcycle entitlement??

(And, touches wood - mine will come back clear of any speeding fines!)

cheers

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

oh yes I am sure peter

That nice helpful young man in Mumbai told me that it would not happen untill the 25th of june as it was a new line.... I tried to point out that it was a new number not a new line but he seemed happy enough as he explained it in Hindi.....

Tell DVLA you've lost them in the move, and miraculously 'rediscover' them if necessary. Then you've still got the originals as proof of entitlement

You can obtain from the DVLA your driver record that they hold.
At work I have to sign an authority for the company to obtain mine as they have a responsibility to check the validity of anyone who may drive any company vehicle.
It costs a nominal sum to obtain this info - but in my case, I just ask work for a copy of my record.

You can apply directly to the DVLA for yours. Do it in advance and check that the details are correct. If not, argue the toss before you send off the licenses. After that there should be no issues but if there are, you have their record that they sent to you.

Nod Andy

I appreciate the thought

BUT taking marts view point, and completing http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Mo ... /DG_067507 seems to be the way to go...

I will have a closer look at that I think - all online and no worrying about things being lost

Yep, Mart's suggestion is definitely the way to go!

..... though somewhat more expensive! I really don't know why anyone would want to pay more than they need to.

To get a replacement license costs £20 a throw - whereas a change of address is free. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Dr ... DG_4022088

I believe that work pays a lot less than that for our records.

HOWEVER
Why not just check your details online? I've just discovered that you can do this for FREE: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Mo ... /DG_067508
(Can't tell you how easy it is to use as you have to have one of those new-fangled picture ID-by-the-back-door licenses - and I've no need for one of them)

I did as DRider suggested before updating the photocard. I think it was about £5.00 for a written statement of what categories I had on my licence

I am fairly sure that they do not accept any sort of copy, photcopy or photo as proof of entitlement.
Probably best to lose it in a drawer, then ask for a new replacement. If it comes back wrong you find it again.
Another way is send a stamped addressed envelope and ask for the old one to be sent back back with a hole punched through it.
MCN once got this agreed with them.

I thought the post office did a verified service?

When I updated my photo card, I was able to do it online with them using my passport photo. You'll need to have one of those 'biometric' jobbies, though I think most are now. The passport will need to be valid.
