So a couple of three weeks ago i cut my finger at work whilst wearing gloves, I trapped it between a pully and a shaft
If i had not worn my gloves i would have lost my finger.
The job was something that i had not done before and i was assisting a contractor...
Problem was the contractor was running late and i was asked to start the job.
I had read the HIRA(Hazard identification and risk assesment) and the method statement and signed these.
On the hira it mentioned about using lifting equipment if required, but not the method statement.
When i trapped my finger i asked for a plaster to keep it clean, which is where i dropped a bollock.
In doing so it had to go in the accident book and to all intents and purposes that should have been it.
May i point out i work for a company without a blame culture!!!! Yeah right.
There was a full investigation and on monday i have to go to a safety hearing and dicuss why i had'nt followed the method statement...
Having read the method statement. Mysteriously it seems it was not the one i signed, how strange is that
It also points out that lifting equipment is to be used that basically looks like i have not taken any notice and do my own thing.
I have asked for the signed method statement and funny enough it has dissapeared, how unlucky is that.
The manager in question i liked has a person and i respected him.
I find it hard to look him in the eye and in all honesty i think he is a sneaky twat, covering his own arse and dropping me in the shit.
At this moment i am not a happy chappy and find it hard to trust the people i work with.
I have mentioned this to my manager and he does believe me.
The site i worked on has 2 plants and the top manager has been to see the site foreman about my attitude to safety.
Tez has come to my assistance and pointed out that if i am unsure i will ask for clarrification.
What pisses me off there it to me feels like a witch hunt against me trying to put the final nail in the coffin and trying to dig up the dirt, which is not there.
Finally it seems to me that i need duplicate copies of all HIRAS and method statements before proceeding with the job.
And also if i do cut my finger grin and bare it and keep my own personel first aid kit

That is just shite, a case of passing the buck and avoiding responsibility.
From now on if there is no method statement just dont do it without say so from someone that WILL accept responsibilty
Where I work we have toolbox talks on evrything, which we have to sign for,to say we have been trained to look out for hazards ect
(getting in/out of lorry safely,looking for trip hazards,not slipping on mud, moss, ice, not getting injured doing your job ect )
The bottom line is whatever happens is our own fault because weve been trained not to have accidents, therefore you are stupid and were not rsponsible

I eventually found an answer to most of the b.s. ....... and worked for myself.

There was a method statement which went in my favour because the use of lifting equipment was not on there.
The method statement for the task has been changed to look like i have not followed it.
The origional has dissapeared

You can't train people to NOT have accidents because otherwise it's a deliberate act. No court will find against you just because you signed a piece of paper saying you were trained how to walk on ice. The worst case scenario is that you will find them finding you complicit to a degree because you understood the risk. Something they would do anyway.

Fark sake. I'm all for health and safety in the workplace, but this is taking the piss. I'm so glad (and lucky!) that I work in a place that uses common sense by the lorry load. If we injure ourselves, we sort it out, get the piss taken and get on with life.

Bureaucracy is the killer of business.

I learned from the place I used to work (spit!) that the Health and Safety department exists purely and simply to ensure that anything that goes wrong is YOUR FAULT not theirs.

But that's how it always was - you hurt yourself ... bugga, why did I do that, plaster, bandage, whatever. Get on with it and try to avoid doing again.
Just the same but without pointless inquests.

Obviously, sometimes things area bit more serious and the working environment can do with being improved a bit but this culture really pisses me off.

The things we used to do as kids - particularly in the scouts - you'd never be allowed to do these days - but they gave so much more fun, enjoyment and taught us how to improvise, live with dangers and manage them.

You may be glad to hear that scouting is becoming more popular again, then again, by the sound of it, you may also prefer to keep that old door tightly locked.

We had a things not to do with blades poster appear in the crewroom not long ago. One of the blokes read it and said we're not bloody stupid. I didn't mention that my thumb was bandaged because I'd been trying to use my stanley knife as a screwdriver.

its TOTALLY wrong to blame you like that for the accident, H&S is not about finding the blame on the injured person, its about finding out what went wrong. if i was investigating it i would want to know why you were given the wrong MS and bollock the person who gave it to you. people like your H&S guy are what give the rest of us a bad name.
