Late this afternoon the peace and quiet of Coventry was shattered by a loud bang and a shaking of houses (well it certainly shook mine).

Seems it was Tim's best buddies flying a Typhoon at supersonic speeds ... apparently due to a helicopter broadcasting some emergency
:smt017

Tim, could you have a word and ask them to keep the noise down a bit?
'Mystery Explosion' Was Jet's Sonic Boom

Image
The loud bang sound was the sonic boom of an RAF Typhoon jet like this one

A loud bang heard across a large part of England was from a sonic boom caused by a Typhoon jet, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

Police and fire services in the West Midlands were inundated with phone calls shortly after 6pm from concerned members of the public.

Many people on Twitter and other social networking sites confirmed they had also heard the noise, some as far as Swindon and Oxfordshire.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence confirmed the bang was caused by a Typhoon fighter aircraft.

The plane was one of two Typhoons that had been launched following an emergency call from a helicopter.

The helicopter had transmitted on the wrong frequency, the MoD spokesman said.

Residents, mainly in the Coventry area, said they had heard a gigantic bang which police initially suggested was down to a minor earth tremor.

However, the British Geological Survey told Sky News it had no seismic records to indicate a tremor had struck.

Theories abounded on Twitter, ranging from bomb blasts to giant earthquakes.

The reports were retweeted by thousands of people and the incident rapidly became one of the site's largest trending subjects.

Used to have a lot of trouble with em too.

When we first moved in and enjoying our garden in the sunshine had a Harrier popup over the hedge.... Could see the whites of his eyes.

The low level flying boys would be running down the valley then exit over the white house at the end of the woods. That's us. It was too much so the missus had a go at them and its much better now. Kind of hard to imagine one of those sneeking up on you but they can and do make for a very big surprise!

I had the fright of my life on holiday once driving along a typical East Anglian road - narrow and with dykes each side - braked a bit sharpish as the straigtht road suddenly went 90 right, and heard a horrible noise. It was an old car so my brain computed it as a car noise - till I looked over my shoulder and saw a bloody great yank aircraft rising up a few feet away and coming straight at me!

Well it looked as if it was coming straight at me!

Bloody RAF.. been fighting with their red tape brigade for weeks now while funnily enough, doing some airfield changes so they can park those things down south.

I shall complain to Biggles when Im next down there :smt002

You sure it wasn't the collective realisation that Sky Blues were getting relegated??...or Andy Thorn leaving a Curry house??

I saw the whole thing yesterday teatime. According to the local radio news it was a pair of Euro Fighters but we only saw one
We heard it long before we saw it,sounded like the fighter pilot was doing a lot of throttle blipping then when the copter and fighter came into view the jet was cleary shadowing the copter then he circled the copter, waggled his wings and fucked off vertical ! ! !
Amazing

They show off in the Falklands daily. Up runway, pull back on stick, vertical before theyve hardly taken off then barrel roll into the clouds

The freight run Hercules pilot took umbridge though one thursday, came in low banked past the tower sideways in a 'powerslide' like turn and whummped down on the runway like a harrier jumpjet. Made Biggles in the Typhoon seem like a chav..

I was sat in a Typhoon yesterday. Not the one that caused the stir but it was powered up. And I did have a Mech Sergeant tell me in no uncertain terms to NOT pull the handle between my legs or I'd end up through the hangar roof sharpish. :smt003

Then we stood on the line and watched one come in. They are stupid loud at walking pace. :smt002

Forgot to say when the jet circled the copter the pilot went belly up to clearly display a FULL missile rack
It made TV news here, the coptor jockey accidentally broadcast on the Ive been hi jacked channel, hence the fighters
OOPS ! ! !

Which leads one to wonder what the fighters were going to do about the hijacked copter - doesn't bear thinking abiout really!
